McNeese State - a few observations from their practices & scrimmages

International Man of Mystery
Looks like McNeese State practices are open to the public. Several members from their message board (GeauxCowboys.org) attend, and have commented on what they see.

Some notes from their first scrimmage, 8/16/14:

Roamingpoke:

Kent Shelby just goes and gets it. If it's in his zip code the ball belongs to him. I was very impressed.

Also impressed by the speed and aggressiveness of the young DB's. We should see some good depth as the season matures.

Freshman Ryan Ross is solid and he reminds me of ex-Dallas Cowboy Robert Newhouse. Kelvin Bennett seems bigger and faster than last year.

Out of the QB's, Tyler Bolfing looks very good with noticeable arm strength. Daniel Sams is working on learning the offense but is fast on his feet getting to the edge. He will bring a different dimension for sure. Grant Ashcraft showed his running ability and he will be very promising for the future if he continues to improve.

OL is HUGE!! Dylan Long is a beast running inside and catching passes out in the flat. His pass catching skills have really improved.

CrossFire07:

a lot of beautiful balls thrown. Deep balls.Shelby made an awesome catch for a td.

I only noticed one busted d play. A "slow white boy" was able to get about 30 yards down the sideline to catch a ball but 3 guys were there QUICK. Who caught that ball? Was it Dylan on a wheel route?

WLARef:

One thing I noticed about Sams though is the way he carries the ball. He's very fast and and very athletic, but he needs to put the ball away. he carries it like a loaf of bread.

cbuck:

I can't ever remember so much depth at QB. It's hard to pick a favorite much less a starter.

I'd have to say Bolfing starts, and Sam comes in a lot.

If we are playing against any blitzing, over aggressive defenses, Sam and Briscoe will make them pay with their feet, and Bolfing with his arm. I say that as a matter of conventional wisdom, but Bolfing and Ashcroft showed they can run, while Sam and Briscoe both had perfectly thrown balls.

A couple things I noticed about the Saturday scrimmage. Our defense is FAST!!!!! We got burned a few times but we were able to chase people down again. That is something we have not been able to do in a few years. I cannot say enough about the offensive line. We will be able to run whenever we want to this year.

Some notes from their second scrimmage, 8/23/14:

SulphurPoke:

The offense came out smokin' from the get go with the defense settling down and pretty much shutting the offe se down in the second half of the scrimmage. Looks like Bolfing firmly established himself as the starter. He throw some nice balls today. Seems as if he and Shelby have a little chemistry out there. Oh by the way, Shelby is something special. Daniel Sams looked confused today. He didn't do a lot of running today and his passes were very inaccurate as evidence as his 2 ints and many missed passes. I think he is still going to get significant snaps in the games just because he can run and it makes it that much harder for the other teams to to prepare for. He has to be more accurate and not turn the ball over or his playing time will be greatly dimished. Briscoe actually started the scrimmage and looked really good, but I think it's going to hard for him to get a whole lot of playing time. But, it's nice to see him having success after all he has been through with his knee surgeries. Although there wasn't a whole lot of rushing yards compared to the first scrimmage, but we should always have a fresh RB. Looks like Milton will get a small majority of carries with plenty of touches for Bennett, Holmes and Long. We also have Ryan Ross the true freshman who led all rushers that looks pretty good, but with our depth it's a pretty sure bet that he will be redshirted. As far as receivers go, It looks like we have large group of very capable guys lead by Shelby. On defense, Aaron Sam looked good with a couple of picks. Wallace Scott really looks comfortable in the WLB position. The defense dialed up the pressure in the second half. A lot of QB hurries, forced fumbles, sacks and ints. All in all we are looking pretty good and ready for the start of the season. GO COWBOYS!!

LOL! There was a Mercedes parked with its engine running in the entrance at the top of the southwest ramp to the field. It was there for most of the scrimmage. The joke going on with me and a few other people on the sidelines was that it was our Nebraska spies. They stayed in the car to be hidden and because they weren't acclimated to the heat.

OLECOWBOY:

LET THEM SPIES IN AND TREAT'EM NICE. WE HAVE COACH VIATOR AND HIS STAFF. AS BUM PILLIPS WOULD SAY,
"He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n" RIP Bum

Also, I found this one pretty funny. Because what's posted here at HuskerBoard goes directly to Bo's office:

mcTailGator:

Nebraska fan Forum is asking from some information about our team.

Want to know what type of offense we will run.

McNeese72:

HuskerBoard.com is definitely not goEMAW.com. Not nearly as interesting.

If someone posted stats from their second scrimmage there, I didn't see them.

i just want to point out that a louisiana team with a cowboy mascot is pretty uninspired, you guys.
You would have to know the history of John McNeese, who the univeristy is named after, to understand where the mascot name came from.

I guess you'd have to care enough to look it up on Wikipedia. But absent that, could you give us the executive summary?
John McNeese was a pioneer educator in Southwest La. He was also a cattle rancher who led the first cattle drive across the Sabine River (that river between Texas and La.). That is the very short version.

Oh, and I almost forgot. Bookie_Pimp says to tell you guys hello. He told me you guys would love me if I told you that. He wouldn't lie now would he?

cool. i did know he was an educator, but did not know he also drove cattle. just struck me as odd that such a culturally and geographically rich state as LA would have a cowboy as a mascot, especially since that is not an apparent identifier. but now i know.

Lake Charles is about 30 miles east of the Texas line and about 45 miles north of the Gulf. Culturally, SW La. is like a suburb of Texas. Of course, there are some Cajuns here as they are a few in SE Texas.

I will let Cbuck know that there are some people to validate. i'm just a peon moderator and can't access that part. Note that a new poster's first 3 posts go into a moderation filter to be approved. That is because we had trouble with spammers posting early on in the board's life. When you are validated, I'll try to keep on top of any moderated posts that need approval.

Here is a little more on our Universities name sake...

John McNeese (July 4, 1843 - June 5, 1914) was an educator in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and the first superintendent of schools of Imperial Calcasieu Parish. McNeese University in Lake Charles is named in his honor.

Was actually a soldier in the Union Army but we forgive him for that.

McNeese was born on July 4, 1843, McNeese was a businessman and rancher. In 1873, McNeese began a cattle drive from Central Texas to New Orleans, but due to a drought and the Panic of 1873, he was forced to end the drive in the Calcasieu area after crossing the Sabine River; he then sold his cattle and settled in near Lake Charles. McNeese earned his law degree from Tulane University; the next year, he became the first Superintendent of Schools of Imperial Calcasieu Parish. As superintendent, McNeese made numerous advancements to the state of education in the parish. In 1940, Lake Charles Junior College changed its name to John McNeese Junior College to recognize McNeese; this institution is now McNeese University.

Looking forward to the game.

I was there in 2002 but just can't make it there this time. I'll be sitting in front of the TV though.

Truth is guys,

We don't really know what to expect. Head Coach likes to keep our QB's out of their comfort zone in practice so that they improve on those things. Its really hard to say what kind of an offence we will see on Saturday. I suspect a 2 QB system is probably going to happen, which I bet Bo is expecting as well. Look for 4 Running backs to share some time. Especially from our two SEC transfers.

We have a pretty talented OL that gets the job done.

On Defense we run a 4-2-5 alignment mostly. Lots of speed in the backfield.
