Missouri, Mizzoo, or Mizzou?

Never thought about this much, but when I went to the game I saw these three names.

I know that "Missouri" has a distinctive "z" sound, so is that why they replace the "s" with a "z"?

And on the "zoo" part, is that trying to make a connection with the mascot, the tiger? (Tiger at the zoo, etc.) And if so, why is "zoo" the spelling sometimes, but in the stadium itself it says "Mizzou"?

Has Missouri always had a complex about its actual name? Is there something more hip or cool about "zoo" this or that?

Just curious - very sincere questions actually.

Actually, I prefer "Mo".

"Lawrence", KS = "Larry"

"Missouri" = "Mo"

CU = "CUrly"

as in the three stooges that we have to play each season.

its from a chant way back in the day. Mizzou-rah. School used to go by MSU and not MU. MSU gives you the Mizzou sound. Obviously a cheer from 100 years ago are lame by todays standards, but it was like i said MIZZOU- RAH! cleaver play on words for some guy back in the early 1900's and that my friend is why it is.

The who welcome to the 'ZOU thing is about 3 years old. Its a play off MIZZOU.

hope that shines the light'

Missouri or Mizzou, they're both fine either way.

Personally, I still prefer hearing Cornhuskers instead Huskers... PPL always want to change things up.

But it is easier to just type Huskers though :)
