Missouri - Nebraska Victory Bell?

Fuzzy

All-Conference
With talks of the Big 10 expansion, one of the most underlying issues that came across my mind is that if missouri or nebraska leaves the Big 12 for the Big 10, without taking the other one as well. What will happen to the Missouri - Nebraska rivarly and the Victory trophy that we have played for every year since 1922. The rivarly itself dates back to 1892, so if Missouri leaves without Nebraska or vice versa, what happens to the trophy and the rivalry?

Unfortunately, It goes by the wayside like OU-NU, Texas-Arkansas, Miami-Florida, and probably a dozen others that I cant think of.

Stupid Question time... Didnt Nebraska have rivalry with Minnesota back in the 30's and 40's when Minnesota was actually pretty good???

Yes, Minnesota was a big time rivalry. Although now that MU thinks that they're hot sh*t i'll miss beating them year in and year out again

OMG, the victory bell!

For the extra $11M/yr, I think each school could buy their own victory bell. I laugh when I see that thing during the game, like anyone really gives a crap about it. Don't mean to offend you if you do. It doesn't mean a thing to me. It's a good game some years, but I don't really think of it as a rivalry that must be preserved.

i wouldn't have known about it if it wasn't for NCAA Football (the video game).

What concerns me more is losing the streak we have with Kansas, which I believe is the longest streak of two teams playing each other in NCAA history. If it's not the longest, it's definitely up there. Although the series has been completely one-sided, it's still pretty cool to have that history behind us.

The rivalry itself would fall to the wayside. Honestly, it hasn't even been an interesting rivalry except over the last decade or so. Before that, Nebraska was beating Missouri left and right every year.

The trophy is an odd scenario. It was made by a fraternity from Nebraska. So, my guess is that the trophy would just be returned to UNL. But, who knows.

That is what i was looking for, what would happen to the trophy. I Didn't know if they returned to a university, or threw it in a closet for all i know.

Funny story, my fraternity (obviously not my chapter since I didn’t go to UNL) stole it from a church and it was used as a fraternity trophy between two groups until my fraternity donated it to be used as a trophy for the NU/MU game.

Trophy games are just traditions from the past. MU has like 4 or 5 of them. W/ OU, NU, ISU & KU for sure that I know of. I think the reason the MU/NU is either no really known of is because it’s held and exchanged by two 'secret societies'. If it was one the teams carried around and cheered about after the game it would probably carry more meaning. That and if MU didn’t go into hibernation for nearly 25 years.... <_<

If you ask any Mizzou fan, "Who is your rival?", you'll get the answer: "Kansas". If you ask "Who else?", you'll hear "Let's go burn Lawrence!!".

The two of you could still play.

Clemson (ACC) plays SCar (SEC) yearly.

Georgia (SEC) plays GT (ACC) yearly.

Florida (SEC plays FSU (ACC) yearly.

Just because you're not in the same conference doesn't mean you can't play on a yearly basis.

I checked because i knew MU/KU was up there too. That and I was curious.... :)

#1 all time played is Minn/Wisc at 119 games

#2 all time played is MU/KU at 118 games

#3 all time played is NU/KU at 116 games

FWI NU/MU is at 103 games played

Yeah the church it was stolen from is actually in my hometown of Seward...not sure exactly which church.

From collegefootballhistory.com:

Nebraska-Missouri Bell
Issued to the winner of the Missouri-Nebraska football game ... Originated in 1927. Laid aside in World War II years, and later resurrected in 1947 ... Bell was originally stolen from a church in Seward, Neb., by two Nebraska fraternities (Phi Delta Theta and Delta Tau Delta) who shared the same house ... When each fraternity moved to separate living quarters, they battled for possession of the bell each year in a specified contest athletic or academic ... When in 1927, Missouri proposed a suitable trophy be established for the Nebraska-MU football rivalry, the bell was suggested and adopted - engraved on one side with an "N" and on the other with an "M" ... At Nebraska, the bell is cared for by the the Innocents Society of Nebraska, while the Missouri caretaker is QEBH Society.

Nice work, those are pretty cool pieces of history in this conference. But unfortunately college football is becoming less about things like glory and tradition and more about money, like everything else in this world.
