All I hear is everyone wanting a modern spread offense and that the old option cant work anymore. My question is.....why not combine them both. Some of the time you spread out the field and other times you stack in a power formation such as the Maryland-I. I just cant understand why people think defenses are too fast when we saw today that the option basically negates any speed the defense has, by having several "options" which creates uncertainty for the defense.
See blow out loses against our basic option formation:
2003 Lost to UT 31-7
Lost to Kitty Kat State 38-8
Lost to Missery 41-24
2002 Lost to Penn St 40-7
Lost to Iowa State 36-14
Lost to Kitty Kat State 49-13
The option still works, don't you believe it won't. The key is the offensive line. Solich started letting that slide and now it's out of control. Our pipeline boys of 1995 could put on a clinic.
See the trend? We fall behind and we couldn't strike back with the quick play! Defenses were getting smart and attacking Nebraskas style of the option. Oh and don't compare the way TAMU ran the option against us with so much success. Our Defense is HORRIBLE!
I would be in favor of some sort of Spread Option with a QB who could actually hit the broad side of a building instead what we had back then. Aka Jammal Lord. Grant it, Lord was a tough SOB who ran hard but his passing was horrendious and teams knew this. Take away the pitch, force Lord to throw, ball game is won!
