Dorrell only joking about Cornhuskers

UCLA causes a stir when recalling the past.

UCLA officials later insisted he was joking to make a point, but Coach Karl Dorrell briefly caused a stir Monday when he used the S-word while recalling Nebraska's early 1980s powerhouses.

Asked if USC was the greatest football team he's ever seen, Dorrell said: "It's up there. I've played against Nebraska teams that were pretty star-studded too. But they had some steroids.''

Dorrell chuckled, then added: "It was a little different in the early '80s. I vaguely remember going back to Nebraska. It was 1982. That was a pretty impressive experience. But (USC) is right up there. It's a very talented football team.''

Asked to clarify his comments later, Dorrell indicated he had no knowledge of the Cornhuskers using steroids.

"All I know is they were a whole lot bigger than we were,'' he said.

Sports Information Director Marc Dellins later said Dorrell was joking and had nothing but the highest respect for Nebraska's football program and its achievements.

Well maybe that could be because.... they were Nebraska and playing for national titles and you were UCLA and playing to kill time between high and low tide?

You know, I had a friend of mine that gave me a book about five years ago called "Big Red Confidential."

It was based on the Huskers of the early 80's. The main 'gist' of the book was steroid use.

That was over 20 years ago...so why is this clown dragging out skeletons? :dumdum

I know it has been whispered about, but my main beef is why a UCLA Coach has any M.O. to reference a 22 year old Husker team that may have been cheating in a week before the biggest game of his season.

somebody must not have enough to talk bout at his press conference so he talks bout this... hmmm... how bout talk about that team ur playin this week, karl... umm wait who are they playing? oh ya that team with the big winning streak.. wait a minute, wait a minute, its coming to me!!! oh yeah USC... if the steroid this is true, im sure that nebraska was the only team that was using them but it is a mute point cause it happened so long ago.

If , and I repeat if that is true. They could drag half the ncaa into that category. The 80s steroid abuse was everywhere. Ask Mark mcgwire, Jose Conseco. Hell ask Brian Bosworth. Its not a good idea to single any team out.

I almost hope now we could play UCLA somehow in the bowlgame. Possible storyline could Steriods or the fact that Callahan's son is a backup QB at UCLA. FYI - Callahan's son Brian wears a lot of Husker gear in So Cal and catches flak from his teammates. There is also a very good chance he will become a grad assisstant at NU, or possible UCLA, after he is finished with college, which I believe is after this year.
