Kevin Williams kept asking when he would be cleared for contact, and the Nebraska athletic training staff kept giving the defensive tackle the same answer: “We'll let you know.”
Williams eventually realized they weren't going to relent on the original plan, so he eagerly waited for March 31, when the Huskers would return to practice after spring break.
“I definitely trusted what they were thinking,” he said. “They have my best interests. They know best.”
It made the return that much sweeter last week when the hard-luck junior finally got back to mixing it up with his NU teammates — instead of going through all of the individual and position drills and then taking a seat when the rough stuff started.
“That's the game,” Williams said. “It's all about contact. You really miss it.”
Williams can speak from experience now that the 6-foot-2, 275-pounder twice has torn up knees during his time as a Husker.
