My assesment of the WF game

TheKiD

Starter
Offense-

OL: played pretty well IMO. Most of the time they gave Keller all the time in the world to throw. They need to work on their run blocking a bit, as they didn't open up a lot of holes for lucky to run through... hence why BC had Keller throwing all over the place.

QB: Keller looked extremely uncomfortable out there. I really think the game speed is getting to him. The OL gave him a lot of time and still he overthrew or threw behind his receivers a lot. Those two fades to the corner of the end zone were horrible. He seemed to get into rhythm at the end of the first half in the hurry-up offense... but then again WF was playing a loose zone and left about a 4-5yard cushion on the receivers. Next week is make or break for him.. if he gets swallowed up against USC, we have to think about bringing in Ganz or somebody... hey Toronto cut Crouch.. maybe we could find some loophole to get him another year of eligibility? LOL!

WR: Get. Open. PLEASE! Oh, and catch the ball. There were not as many drops as there were last week, but still they dropped some key balls that stalled out drives. They have got to run crisper routes and shake the DBs.

RB: Lucky, Castille... look pretty damn good. Lucky's gotta remember how to catch the ball out of the backfield again, but other than that.. solid

Defense-

DL: It's damn hard to replace the starters we lost here.. but they're doing alright. They're young and will get better.. but they definitely need to get a lot more pressure on the QB if we want to compete in the top 15.

LB: Disappointing. I'm not sure if it's skill or scheme, but these guys: ruud, octo, mckeon.. do not look dominant at all. They look... well, lost most of the time. Well, hell I know these guys can play.. I have to blame scheme. The amount of times WF picked up 8+ yards running straight up the gut was ridiculous.

CB: Murillo looked alright I think he'll keep getting better. Grixby, not a terrible game for him.. but not great.

SS/FS: Got beat a couple times.. don't remember who it was but those two deep slants, the first their QB overthrew him by a little, the second caught for 61 yards to the 1 yard line. Whoever that was just looked SLOW.. he picked up on the route but just got blown by.

Conclusion? Bottom line, I don't think we'll be able to compete in the top 15 very consistently until we get rid of Cosgrove. They really didn't show us very many looks but we couldn't adjust. We consistently get beat on end-arounds and draw plays. For all the talent we have on defense we should look a lot better than we do... and I attribute this to Coaching.. our LBs especially look lost out there a lot of the time, and I have to think that is being in the wrong defensive set for what the offense is doing. I don't think I've ever seen a nebraska team get beat up the middle as much as we did today.

Fire Cosgroovy? I think so. And no people this is not because of one game. I've given the guy three years to shore up our defense.. and quite frankly it's getting worse. I don't think there has been a game that defensive playcalling hasn't been at best questionable and at worst horrible. Time to cut ties... anyone see that the best defense in the country (LSU) is coached by..... drumroll.. Bo Pelini! We need to get an old-school smash-mouth defensive coordinator. I mean, WF for crying out loud played more physical football than we did. But, alas.. I'm not sure that BC will let Cosgroovy lose his job.. but I can dream.

And no, I'm not a Solich fan, I don't hate BC. In fact, I really like what BC is doing with our offense. But I think Cosgrove is a scourge. Defense wins championships, so they say.. and Cosgrove is holding us back.

I've been on the fence with Cosgrove for a couple seasons now. I'm thinking this is the season we need to see something more from him or it might be time to start looking for a replacement. We'll just have to see how the season goes, I guess.

I was initially dismayed by some of our defensive display today but I look back on it and I really am not going to blame Cosgrove. The two deep passes we were in good coverage with the exception of one guy (our deep safety). The players have to make plays. The linebackers have to get off blocks. Plain and simple and on those outside running plays they were basically being shielded and not getting the job done. Cosgrove can't go out and make shed blocks or make tackles for them.

I was also dumbfounded by our apparent lack of ingenuity on offense today. I don't remember having a counter or reverse play all day long. I bet we could have picked up 15/20 yards a couple times on those short 3rd downs by handing the ball off to Lucky and having Nunn or Purify come back around. Not only would it get first downs it would also loosen up the defense for later plays. I don't get it. The only reason I could see not doing it is so USC wouldn't see it, but we have to take care of one game at a time. Where are the screen passes or passes in the flat to Lucky or God forbid, a fullback (who would be soooooo wide open). The only good that comes out of this is that we win and are undefeated. We do need to get much better.

Bottom line is we just don't have the talent yet to compete with the big boys of college football. It's gotten better, but we're just not there yet.

Getting out of there with a win is great, but until we can start dominating teams like WF on the road, blowing out the northern big 12 teams, and consistently beat OK or TX year in and year out, we'll never be feared in college football again.

Come on, did you get that from today's game, or those rose-colored sunglasses? No need to jump off the bandwagon after riding high all last week.

Do you think Texas can consistently beat OU and Nebraska year in, year out?

I agree with you completly me and my dad were talking about that he needs to go IMO. we should never of let Bo Pelini Go

Cos must go. If you want to look at lack of talent it's partly his issue too. If recruits don't come here to play for him and he can't prepare our team to tackle then he needs to go. His schemes seem to be, let's line up and hope for the best. No real change in strategy during games, it runs through both sides of the ball.

There were definitely some blown tackles. Nobody can argue that. But we eventually keyed in on the backfield trickeration and shut down their O in the second half. I don't think you can say they failed to adjust.

They definitely sucked on the fundamentals, though.

Although does anybody else agree that the backfield was pretty solid, aside from some of the blown safety help?

They were really good on the intermediate throws and the DB's tackled well. The safety coverage is a concern with USC next weekend so let's hope it was just a blown coverage or miscommunication and not poor coverage getting beat on a move.

I think the deal with Bo was he said he wanted to HC job or else he was gone and they said no so he left.
