My Observations from the Recliner

  1. Taylor Martinez played his best game tonight, by far. I'll forgive the INT at the end of the first half because I thought Beck would have learned his lesson last week. Props to Taylor for coming through when the pressure was on.
  2. Rex Burkhead - one of the most underrated backs in the country. A gamer. I have more confidence when the ball is in his hands then anyone. If I were a woman, I'd want to have his baby.
  3. Why are we so piss-poor at blitzing? It's disturbing...
  4. The 2-gap technique seems to be prone to giving up 4-5 yard chunks in the run game... I don't think we can stick with this in the long-term. I think we are undersized on the D-Line a bit. Our defensive ends are terrible. And I'm including Meredith.
  5. Secondary seemed to play pretty well in the 2nd half, hopefully they can build on that.
  6. A-rod on the first series in the 2nd half - open you damn eyes man and block that guy so Martinez can throw the ball. When we went 3 and out to start the second half, I was certain the game was over...
  7. Marcel Jones is good for a false start every game. I just don't understand why he can't clean it up. That could have been a drive killer in the 4th quarter.
  8. Did Choi play? I didn't see him. Did he pee in Beck's Cheerios or something?
  9. Our young wide receivers are going to be huge for us in the coming years.
  10. I think Beck called a pretty lackluster game in the first half. He made some good adjustments. It's nice to have a coach that can do that. He's had some shaky points thus far, but overall for a first year playcaller you really can't expect better.
  11. The Pelini brothers had better figure out how to slow down mobile quarterbacks, because Michigan could light up the scoreboard against us.
  12. My wife thinks I'm bipolar.... I think a lot of us were tonight.

Pelini hasn't ever been a big blitz guy, at least in my memory. We've had to do it more this year because of our secondary being so inexperienced and not covering that well down field. The only bad blitzing I remember was when we brought two linebackers but they were easily 7 yards away from the line of scrimmage. They need to get closer to the line if they're going to blitz.

I don't know how I feel about this. The system works well if it's executed well, but we've never seemed to do a great job with it since Pelini got here.
