NCAA to allow schools to pay for guardians on recruiting visits

The ruling to ban satellite camps has dominated the headlines in past weeks, but there is another rule that recently passed that will have a big impact on the NCAA and recruiting.

Proposal 2015-52 will allow institutions to pay the actual round-trip costs for a prospective student-athlete's parents or legal guardians to accompany the prospect on his official visit and will be implemented August 1, 2016.

The vote passed 14 to 1 with only the Sun Belt conference voting against it, according to the NCAA's Division 1 Council report.

The current rule only allowed for the prospect's travel and accommodations to be paid for and prohibited schools from paying for transportation costs incurred by relatives, friends or legal guardians. Under that rule, prospects were either taking official visits by themselves, or parents, guardians or high school coaches were taking on the costs to accompany the recruit on the visit.

The new rule specifies the funds will be available for transportation and meals for the parents or guardians. Prospective student athletes are permitted to take five official visits starting on the first day of classes of the prospective student-athlete's senior year, so this rule will be in place for the class of 2017.

Now just give us earlier officials.

Smart move. It will be a good way to clean up some recruiting weekend shenanigans too.

Agree, players should be allowed to take officials as soon as they finish their junior year, at the latest. Not sure how much that would change strategy, because of signing day timing, but is would at least be good to have the options.

Can't be understated how big this is for places like Nebraska. Took them long enough, but the NCAA reacted from the pressure of the Satellite Camp decision.

That's huge.

and...yes...now we need earlier official visits.

This is absolutely gigantic. This is what was needed after the loss of satelite camps. Booyah. GBR

My understanding is that they are already reconsidering their sattelite decision. However, it may just be that they are trying to work it so lower division/non-P5 coaches can join at P5 campuses rather than the other way around.

Does transportation include hotel?

Good question. I would think that it includes lodging of some sort. But even if not, that's a fairly light bill comparatively.
