Neb. officials warn of possible Internet loan scam

updated 4:44 p.m. ET May 29, 2008

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance says there is a scam that targets people who borrow money through Internet-based companies.

A company that calls itself Penbrook Financial Group says on its Web site that it offers personal and business loans.

But the company requires upfront payments, which is illegal in Nebraska.

Officials say there's no office at the listed Omaha address. If those running the Web site can be found, they could face fraud charges.

The department is trying to shut down the Web site. In the meantime, people should not to complete the online application, which requires personal information.

There was no immediate response to a message sent Thursday through the site from The Associated Press.
