Title: USC wins again

Post: Best college football program ever?

My first instinct (and reply) was that USC 00s is actually worse than Nebraska 90s. This led me to do the following breakdown:

Nebraska (Undefeated Seasons: 3, National Champs: 3)

90: 9-3

91: 9-2

92; 9-3

93: 11-1

94: 13-0

95: 12-0

96: 11-2

97: 13-0

98: 9-3

99: 12-1

Avg: 10.67 - 1.56 (only 90-98 seasons)

USC (Undefeated Seasons: 1, National Champs: 2)

00: 5-6

01: 6-6

02: 11-2

03: 12-1

04: 13-0

05: 12-1

06: 11-2

07: 11-2

08: 11-1

Avg: 10.22 - 2.33

And, of course their best 5 year stretch is 59-6, 1 undefeated season and 2 NCs. Ours is 60-3, 3 undefeated seasons and 3 NCs. Interestingly enough, for the total 10 year period Nebraska was 108 - 15, USC after 9 seasons is 92 - 21. There is no way that USC in 00s can reach the win total or the winning percentage that Nebraska had in the 90s.

Is this a sign that I dwell too much on the past?

six and one half dozen to the other. i like to think we we're better, but its one of those bird/magic arguments. i like your research though! :restore

98 NU wasn't 9-3, it was Solich's first year and they lost 5 games! 00 USC was not Carroll, why would you count the coach that was fired?

I say USC isn't the best football program ever because they were pretty much non existant during the 80s and 90s

Heh. It actually was 9-4. If you count the bowl game loss. And of course he would count the coach that was fired because he is comparing two programs over the course of a decade (albeit different decades).

4 games which was the most since the 1960s. That was a hint of things to come. You intentionally didn't put in the bowl game loss, because you have the bowl games in the other seasons!

Ha! You both are right. I miscounted when I was looking at Huskers.com. Funny thing is, it doesn't change the percentages or any of the stats in a meaningful way.

mmmtodd: I think you mean "6 of one, half-dozen of another."

I'd take 95 NU vs anybody! Anytime you score 52 points a game and all you do is run and folks cannot stop you are basically invincible!

Hey, all I am saying is that it wasn't 5 games.

Solich was such a BAD recruiter that 98 felt like 5 losses! I was thinking we lost to OSU and their odd defense. He could not get a good I-back!

Yeah, you were spot on. I still can't believe I messed that up.

And of course I'd take 95 NU vs anybody, too. I even remember hearing Barry Switzer talk about how if he were coaching today he'd take Osborne's playbook from the 90s because the option is the best play in college football.

Clester Johnson 33 and John Vedral 25, were two very good wing-backs when it came to blocking it was like having a FB or TE blocking a DB on every play.

I dunno about you guys, but I really want NU to get good again so we can roll into USC and beat the crap out of them.

Nothing gives me more joy than putting some of these teams in their place (miami, florida, etc)

And the 95 Huskers are hands down the best team ever.

same difference bud. 6 to you, half dozen to the other guy. regional dialects. living and working all over not just this country, but the world, ive found there is several different ways to deliver this line, but the point gets delivered. thanks for your correction though.

As was stated above it's hard to compare teams from different decades but boy those mid-90's NU teams were FUN to watch. Crushing Florida's mighty offense of the 90's and steam rolling a Vols team with Peyton Manning and tons of future NFL'ers on D was just amazing to watch. USC is good right now, very good but I'd take those Husker teams.
