Nebraska Bookstore to Close

One of Lincoln's oldest retail establishments, and a destination for football fans before Husker home games, is closing its doors.

The University of Nebraska has agreed in principle to buy the Nebraska Bookstore building and real estate at 1300 Q St. for $4.75 million.

Nebraska Bookstore has operated under that name at two different sites since 1937.

The owner, Nebraska Book Co., described what once was the company's flagship store as one that's not performing up to its expectations.

The university has not said how it will use the property. The Board of Regents will vote on the agreement to buy it on June 12.

Built in 1985, the land and building are assessed at $3.5 million, according to the Lancaster County assessor's website.

The store, which offers Big Red clothing lines in addition to textbook rentals, will close "on or about June 8," company officials said. The Lincoln retail operation employs 20.

WHAT? Oh, man. I loved to go to that place. Was just there a couple weeks ago.

Killed by the Internet, I would guess.

My parents have bought me the Husker media guide from there every year for the last 20. I guess they will have to find some place else

That store is where some of my first Husker memories are. My dad would take me there to get Husker gear, and an offensive and defensive poster to hang on my door evey year.

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is seeking proposals for a national clothing retailer to occupy about 19,000 square feet, roughly half of the former Nebraska Bookstore building at 13th and Q streets in downtown Lincoln.

The store closed in June after Nebraska Book Co. agreed to sell its flagship store and real estate for $4.75 million. Nebraska Bookstore had operated under that name at two different sites since 1937.

Nebraska Book Co. described the store at the time as one that wasn't performing up to its expectations.

The request seeks proposals from developers who can arrange for a national retailer that will complement the area's development and whose merchandise will be attractive to university students. UNL said its preference is for a retail clothing and/or footwear merchandiser, but will accept alternative proposals.

Proposals are due from private developers Sept. 14. The university wants the space to be completed and open for business in 2016.

There's also a store in the union like 3 blocks away that sells the exact same stuff, but more of it. But I guess that's always been the case.

Nebraska bookstore hands down
Nebraska Bookstore was better for Husker gear. I can't remember which had better prices for class text books. It was the worst when I would go look for a book and it was "sold out". So lame.
Yeah, after being a UNL student and spending many hundreds of dollars at each place I felt like both bookstores ripped off students. For textbooks and for Husker gear. And the Nebraska Bookstore got me one last time before they shut the doors for good. Just before they closed they had a big on-line sale. I bought a Husker hoodie, a long sleeved Husker shirt, and a short sleeved Husker shirt. Got my package in the mail a couple weeks later (shortly after they closed for good). They didn't include the short sleeved shirt. When I realized this, I thought, "Nice job Husker Bookstore. You got me one last time."

I used to absolutely HATE going into the book store. Dropping that kind of money only to have them buy them back at the end of the semester for next to nothing.

My daughter rents hers on line now and doesn't hardly step foot in the college book store and saves a ton of money. I am speculating that this may be a major factor in why this is closing.

Book rentals and other online resources are the main reasons the traditional college bookstores are closing.
