Nebraska defense wants to be a strength

A&M lost 2 games in 2012. lost 4 in 2013. Still have not won their division yet, which Nebraska did in their second year, in route to a 10-2 reg season. So I guess i'm failing to see what A&M has done that is so much more impressive than Nebraska in their 1st two years. Sure, it's the SEC (yayhoo!) and they beat Bama. But as a whole, what else?

They finished the season ranked #5

They beat four ranked teams including a complete beatdown of #12 Oklahoma

They beat the #1 team in the country

Their only two losses were by a combined 8 points against two more ranked teams
I'm just making excuses though. Seems like that's norm, yes?

So back to what the topic is actually about, I think the front seven could be scary good and absolutely wreck people. The secondary concerns me with Rose, Jackson, and other unproven players getting put on the field. The safeties should be fine with Cooper and Alexander/Gerry.

Texas A&M had Manziel. And a poor defense. Without Manziel, I'm not sure. And Missouri has to do this pretty consisntently to prove to me that last year wasnt a fluke like their other, what, 1? 2? great seasons under Pinkel? Hell, we beat Georgia too. That's just my opinion.
Nobody wants to admit that the SEC was kinda mediocre last year. I didnt really see one squad outta the SEC thT was overly impressive. Bama was pretty good but had bad moments. Auburn was pretty good but got beat by FSU that quite honestly wasnt the most impressive team week in and week out. Mizzou.........yeah Mizzou. Georgia was right up there with those teams in terms of competetiveness and they were almost as banged up as we were. I really think the SEC could be on the downslide back to regularity.
I am not sure mediocre is a term I would use, but I do think that the SEC is starting to come back to the pack a little bit. I think other conferences are also starting to catch back up personnel wise. The mystique of the SEC has been broken.

As far as defense and the Huskers are concerned I think several factors played into the downward turn.

1. I think there were some differences between big 10 and big 12 offensive styles that NU was not completely ready for personnel wise. The big 10 does have a more rugged style of play that makes it into a grind it out season not a track meet. Just as Mr. Account said, even the spread offenses run in the big 10 are more run oriented.

2. Nebraska missed terribly bad on d-linemen for 2 years straight. You know who they were, they had decent ratings coming into the program they just didn't pan out due to injury or whatever.

3. NU was top heavy in D-backs to LB and didn't have enough good LBs. They were used to playing with one good LB and 6 DBs. David was great and Compton was decent, but no one else really was anything special.

4. Most importantly IMO in BP defense you need really good safety play. Safety play since going to the big 10 has been average to below average at best. Safety play in 2012 was really not good. Last year it got better as the season went on and hopefully it continues to get better.

For me the biggest problem has been on the personnel side and I think it is getting better.

All 3 had mobile QB's.....something that NEB and many solid defenses have had trouble with. Narduzzi at Michigan St has done well against Braxton Miller...however, Taylor had very solid games against the Spartans despite the turnovers.
One solid game***

And Russel Wilson had all but 32 rushing yards against us, 21 of them coming on one play.

Not making a point, just being an anal-retentive snot.
It's all good...but you have to give it to Taylor...he tore them a new one in 2012 at their house.

Yeah I knew mediocre wasnt a good term once Id typed it. Mediocre by SEC fan standards.
