Nebraska Quarterback Battle:

Bleacher Report Article

It's all over, Quarterbacks.

That's right, the comfort of your green jerseys keeping from getting so much as a finger laid on you during those spring drills is no more.

At least according to Nebraska offensive coordinator Shawn Watson.

When Spring Practice starts rolling, apparently so will the inexperienced quarterbacks of UN's football program.

It's all well founded of course.

You see, the quarterback with the most experience, Zac Lee, won't be participating in many of the spring drills this year and out of all the quarterbacks behind him only one has garnered any serious playing time.

It seems though, that Cody Green isn't even safe this spring.

I for one am all for the idea, it is time to see the quarterbacks get creamed a bit and beat up along with everyone else on the team.

It is time for those green jersey contact-a-phobes to pony up and make a play while the real threat of lying on your butt staring up at the sky is there.

Most people will remember when Bill Callahan coached the team to complete ineptitude he was doing it without full-contact practices. He expected college players to tackle without practicing and college quarterbacks to read defenses without fear.

Fear is what drives us.

At the base of every human instinct it is the fight or flight response that guides us through our daily lives. It's that feeling we all get right before either choosing to step on the gas to get through that yellow light or slam on the brake to yield to the red.

Too often last season we saw Husker quarterbacks slam on the breaks instead of gunning the gas. That is, until the Holiday Bowl.

As we come into spring mode it is important for all the coaches to keep the intensity up on this fairly young team. Yes, the entire offense may be back, but it is the entire offense from a year ago.

It is an offense of sluggish imprecision and mediocre stat lines.

Shawn Watson has it right this spring. Put them in the grinder and see who will come out on top.

Will it still be Lee, despite the injury, or will it be the more physically gifted Green, the oft-injured Spano, or the California Phenom Taylor Martinez?

I believe there is only one way to find out, hold to the fire early and often and see which one steps up.

When asked about his decision, Shawn Watson stated plainly, "With a green jersey (there) is that false sense of security (that) develops. We want them to know it's a contact sport and they need to be ready to play the contact sport."

Strong words from a coach that seemed to be finessing his way to the top a year ago, but if he sticks to them it may be some of the best news I've heard in a few months regarding this football program.

A tough quarterback earns respect from his teammates and learns how to play through pain and grit to the last second of each game. A quarterback that takes hits shows tenacity and resilience.

While a quarterback with a green jersey might through accurately and with a pretty spiral the quarterback the is getting hit shows the ability to think on the fly, adjust to a situation and make a play, and most importantly shows the ability to make smart decisions.

Watson is looking for a leader, not a facilitator like the Huskers had last season. That just won't do for a team looking to earn respect in the national spot light.

As Watson said, "If one guy steps up—makes himself the guy or really takes the bull by the horns—we'll probably put the green jersey on him, Where we're at now...we'll put them out there and let them play."

The message is out to-be Husker QBs, if you want safety you must first seize it by the horns.

unfortunately this is already dedhoarse . bringing me to my next point - spring practice & red/white game can't get here soon enough :ahhhhhhhh

Yeah, this is going to be a fun spring for once. Though there may be more risk of injury to some of these QB's, but we will have a good idea of who is a real contender, and who isn't. I have not had that feeling for a long time. You basically had to go by what the coaches THOUGHT. You really never knew how they would act under pressure until they were in a real game in the fall. Cody was kind of a disappointment to me, after all they hype and all. This way when someone gets some hype, maybe there will actually be some substance behind it. It is still a different degree being in a real game with all the noise from the crowd and all, but the speed should be a little closer to what they have been doing in practice. We need people to know what it is like to get hit.

Substance? From all the armchair talent evaluators among us? I don't know...really not sure what's wrong with "having" to go by what the coaches think.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of no green jerseys this year too. But as far as I can tell, it's not going to change anything. We're still going by what the coaches think. They'll still encourage and talk up their players, some of whom won't live up to the hype. Fans will still think they know better about what plays to call and who to start than the coaches.

Hell, a few years ago, a good cross section of this board (myself included) thought we could coach better than BC.

In a weird way, this may be a test to see just who has the "testicular fortitude" to run this team, who wants it bad enough.

Please fellow husker fans dont eat me alive for this comment. Everyone here says this is a great idea until (god forbid) someone for arguements sake...Cody Green snaps his knee. Then they will critize the staff for allowing it to happen. Thats why i personally believe the details of the Husker pratices shouldnt be open to the public. Well there's my comment i'll prepare to get eaten alive for it!

I can see having who ever the starter is at the beginning of the season wearing a green jersey. But the coaches really don't get to see what a guy is like under real pressure if he don't have it coming at him constantly. A guy reacts differently if he knows he really isn't going to be hit. I think it is a fantastic idea to have the backups facing this all the time so that the coaches CAN actually see what a guy does under pressure. Otherwise it is only their speculation, and that speculation could be wrong. Like I said, I was not impressed with Cody after he got to see real game speed coming at him last year. I think his thought process was definitely not what Bo and Watson was seeing in practice.

I am extremely excited for this spring as I feel that we have 4 good, potentially great quarterbacks. I am very excited to see the progression of Green and Martinez, as it is often said that the biggest development for you players occurs between the freshman and sophmore seasons.

:koolaid2: :koolaid2: :koolaid2:

I wonder how far the coaches will actually take the green jersey policy. I'd bet money that we're looking at wrap-ups and a few knockdowns, but no Suh-McCoy type of stuff.

I've yet to see anyone actually answer if there will be green jerseys in the spring game.
You'd have to think there's a big difference between no green jersey during practices & no green jersey during the red/white game when you have the state's 3rd largest city cheering in the stands. IMO it just makes sense to keep the green jerseys off during the spring game simply b/c of the crowd factor. Can they handle the heat of a great D & the excitement the crowd excudes? That's the question I want answered.

The O Line better be at their best or we'll have another season of busted up QB's before we get to September. :ahhhhhhhh

Since designed QB runs seem to becoming a bigger part of the offense, I hope for no green jerseys at the spring game. Otherwise Wats will be pretty limited in the complexity of his offensive gameplan.

Do any of the newspaper guys respond to tweets? Surely somebody knows the answer... unless the coaches haven't decided yet.
