On Thursday, Nebraska will get the green flag to start the season with an exhibition against Wayne State at 7 p.m. at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Though Nebraska should handle the test easily, Miles just wants to make it to the finish line without any nicks on the bumper.

“You just never know,” Miles said. “South Carolina (lost) to Augusta State. You just don’t know.”

What Miles does know, though, is he and the rest of the fans will get a chance to see the Huskers in action after an eight-month hiatus. And after losing to Iowa State in a closed scrimmage last week, and looking a little sloppy in a scrimmage a few days later, Miles is hoping to see simple things done well Thursday night.

Nebraska freshman center Brady Heiman and Wayne State freshman guard Nate Thayer grew up playing basketball together. On Thursday night when Wayne State visits Nebraska for an exhibition game, the two will be on opposing teams for the first time since fourth grade.

Thayer estimated that the two have played 1,000 basketball games as teammates. They led Platteview to four straight Class B state tournaments. They were AAU teammates through four years of high school and played for the same rec league teams from fifth through eighth grades.

“It is super ironic that both of their collegiate careers will begin by playing each other after playing that many games with each other,” Platteview boys basketball coach Tim Brotzki said.

There are about 1,600 people in Springfield, where Platteview High is located. On Thursday, many residents will have a rooting interest in both teams on the court.

“I am super excited to watch those guys play,” Brotzki said. “You can’t put into words what those kids have done for our school, community and program. They spent countless hours in the gym when it wasn’t required and laid a strong foundation for the younger guys in our program.”

Looks ugly.  A lot of that 2015 feeling.  Solid roster coming off a great season and everyone slumps.  Hoping not, but considering the next game counts, we better get it together fast.  34% from the field and 12% from 3, yeesh.
