I am not really sure if this is custom to do on this board but I am doing it anyways. I am a new member on Husker board as of 2:30 this afternoon. I am a sophmore at UNL via Minneapolis. I have been a Husker fans since I was about 9 or 10. I played football in high school and I am very passionate about the game at any level hoping to pursue a career in coaching. My Nebraska connection is my parents met in Omaha in the late 70's. I am more familar with the Huskers in the post-Osborne era but I have watched many tapes of games from the mid-90's and have heard countless Husker stories from my uncle and cousins.
As for my take on last night and the present state of Husker football I have a lot of the same thoughts as most Husker fans. It was pretty obvious that Mizzou is an excellent team and they came ready to play. We on the other hand continue to play lifeless football with no sense of urgency and chemistry. I think the only player I saw get emotional was Keller. On D our senior leaders are pathetic. Not once have I seen them get in someone's face or act like leaders. I think Matt Davison hit it on the head with his analysis. The issue is not so much talent as it is guys don't trust each other out there and they have chemisty problems. Defense, no matter what level, is all about teamwork and gang-tackling. You got to have 11 guys running to the ball. I saw Mizzou do that last night, but I have not seen us do that all season. This had better change quickly or it is going to be a long season.
As far as coaching goes I have defended Callahan and Cosgrove for a long time but after last nights perormance, changes need to be made sooner rather than later. None of the coaches seem to get emotional. I can't believe Callahan did not let Pinkel know that the fake-field goal was wrong and classless. Cosgrove needs to go at the end of the season. He has been here four years and he has shown no signs of progress. For every good game plan he had like last year against Mizzou or Auburn, he calls a stinker like the Ball St. game or last night. I am not ready to jump off the Callahan bandwagon yet. I don't want us to turn into Bama where we are going through coaches every 4 years. I would also like to see how Callahan would do with a different D coordinator before I call for his head.
One last note I leave you all with is the Big 12 needs to crackdown on cheapshots. You saw not only last night by Pig Brown but also in the Texas-Oklahoma game when the OU D end blinsided McCoy after a blown whistle. Pig Brown's hit on Purify would have drawn six figures in the NFL. I played safety in high school and if I ever pulled a hit like that my coaches would have benched me in an instant. These senseless cheap shots are going to get someone seriuosly hurt and the Big 12 needs to take some action.
