Why do some people think they have to protect others from everything. Find something usefull to do with your frickin time. Some kids will start to smoke regardless if they see it in a movie or not. The good thing about movies is that sometimes they show a different world than what the Cleaver's lifed in. :madash

NEW YORK (AFP) - New York state health authorities launched a campaign Tuesday urging major film studio owners to protect children from seeing movies with smoking scenes.

In full page advertisements in the New York Times and Wall Street Journal, Health Commissioner Richard Daines said films showing tobacco use should get an "R" rating, which requires children under 17 to be accompanied by an adult.

But he did suggest an exception for films that show the dangers of tobacco use or depict the smoking habit of a historical figure.

"Exposure to smoking in movies is the single most powerful pro-tobacco influence on children today, accounting for the recruitment of half of all new adolescent smokers," Daines said in the ad.

I think that is a crock of sh#t as well. I think the primary influence is probably parents use and peer pressure.

I do and movies certainly were not my influence. Both my parents smoke and all my friends do/did as well.

Nasty habit. If you don't smoke don't start. It's hard to stop.

Yes, but the point of the post was to bring to light that some people think they need to save the world. I started smoking by stealing my dads cigarettes and wanting to be like him. If I continue to smoke i will be like him, in the grave younger than I should have been. That is my choice though. I don't smoke around people that don't smoke or don't want to be around it.

It is just like the a$$hole out west that want "in god we trust" taken off the currency or the pledge of allegence taken out of schools. Or the lady that wanted records and music regulated because of the " messages in music" I call bull sh#t on all of that. At some point parents have the responsibility of raising their own children and I for one do not want everything we do regulated for what some people consider what is best for us. Opinions are like a$$ holes and everyone has one.

 
i'm against censorship, so i agree that it is kind of bunk. on the otherhand, they make movies pg-13 or r rated if they have lots of drinking, and smoking is way more dangerous to your health than the occasional binge drinking episode, so at least it is consistent.

I don't smoke, so my stance on this isn't influenced by that. However, there comes a point in which personal responsibility must take hold. Ultimately, that rests with the parents - not society, not entertainment, not industry.

I disagree with Uno on the issues of, say, the removal of "In God We Trust" from currency - but that's based on the fact that the government is supposed to be neutral on religion. Having it on the currency seems to promote religion, which is prohibited under our Constitution.

But restrictions on movies based on smoking? When it is seen day in an day out? When it's legal? No.
