Assistant Coach
Nebraska football: Mike Riley knows nine wins, bad losses not good enough
Eric Olson | The Associated Press Last Updated - Aug 19, 2015 17:24 EDT

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Mike Riley would appear to have a tough act to follow at Nebraska, replacing a coach who never won fewer than nine games.

A deeper look at the numbers indicate there's plenty of room for improvement in a program that once prided itself on being in the annual national championship conversation but now has gone 15 years without a conference title.

The Cornhuskers have become known more for wilting in the biggest games. They've lost six of their last seven against Top 25 opponents, lost two straight to an unranked Minnesota team and allowed 129 points in their last two against Wisconsin.

Where is the source for this Riley quote?

It was not in the linked article.

Edit- Had to correct my spelling on Riley....it was bugging me.

I'd like to know exactly what he meant by this. It seems to confirm the theorized "us against the world" mentality that Bo instilled in the team. Maybe it's something schematically different with the defenses?

Last year, Valentine said, "we felt like we were playing with everybody against us. ... I feel like now we have the type of feeling where we're going to go out there and lay it on the line every week and whatever happens happens."

Yeah, maybe it was the author paraphrasing the interview with Riley. And not an actual statement by Riley. It doesn't sound like the type of potential foot-in-mouth statement he'd make.

That sounds very much like something Eric Olson would write, though.

We need a conference title like theres no freaking tomorrow. Getting there and falling flat on our face is pretty much the opposite of what our History deems acceptable.

We have commits that weren't even born the last time we won a conference championship.

It is time.

Pretty much agree......as long as people realize there can be a big difference between falling flat on our face (ala a typical Pelini meltdown) or just falling short but making a respectable showing.

We are WAY past due for a conference title but tOSU's current condition would seem to make that an extreme long shot this year. Making it to the ccg and playing very well may be as good as it gets. And that should be good enough for anybody who is being realistic. I'm going to hope for the title but, if it doesn't come this season, that may not signal anything particularly bad. May not......

This is why last year should have been the transition year. If Eichorst wanted to fire Bo he should have done it after 2013 Iowa when Bo himself challenged him to do it. The fanbase would have been less divided off the heels of a nasty home loss to Iowa. Then this could have been Rileys second year. The schedule sets up fairly nicely for a championship run.

But no. We waited another season to do what is now clearly what he wanted to do all along. Now the schedule only gets rougher after this year. I truly hope Riley and stsff are up for the task. Tough schedules are coming and if we wanna be relevant again the opportunity awaits.

You make a good point here. He probably should have been fired after that Iowa game. Eichorst had plenty of ammo with the leaked tape and Bo's rant after Iowa. I just don't think Eichorst wanted to rock the boat too much in his first year as AD. I also think he may not have gotten Riley if he did it then, and we could have someone totally different. Who would we have ended up with?

I would say it's 50-50 on whether or not we land Riley in that scenario. Obviously he had interest, but he admits the move only happened because the time was right.
