North Carolina...football?

GMoose

All-Conference
I've been watching UNC football for the last 3-4 years now. Butch Jones has been recruiting excellently. They've already churned out some great players, Hakeem Nicks for example. Next year, they've got 5 players on Kiper's top 5 players by position for 2010, 4 of which on a defense that was 6th nationally and returns 10 starters. Their QB T.J. Yates is comparable to Zac Lee in terms of production and fan love, but they've got a young QB who just quit baseball because his football career is looking for studly.

And yes, for the last few years, UNC has been expected to do good things but never mustered more than 8 wins. But I think that their defense will be so nasty next year that even the SEC goons will be drooling. You heard it here first, UNC as ACC champs next year.

Definitely a rising program. I wouldn't be surprised. Miami seems to not be able to put it together, I am not on the Jimbo Fischer bandwagon (yeah, a coaching change will all-the-sudden make them good again when it's an internal pick), and V-tech has a lot of holes to fill.

No.

No.

No.

Defense is great, but the offense just can't score. Oh, and they can't beat NC State. Butch will leave soon IMO for a football school. He won't be putting up with 2/3 filled stadiums on a nice day, MUCH less than that if there's rain in the area. North Carolina just doesn't care about football. I'm afraid GT will stay near the top for a while. For some reason, I'm not too worried about FSU...

Butch Jones? How about Butch Davis?

Anyway, UNC has a history of getting good players. LT, Julius Peppers, Kelvin Bryant, etc. It is the flagship school in a state with a lot of good talent. But it never seems to amount to all that much.

I agree with Killer Cacti. They do kind of like to talk about football, but lose interest if things go south on them.

Well since I'm not from ACC country I guess I can't relate. But that defense is just going to be soooooo good. And I know that spring games aren't much, but Bryn Renner looked solid. If he's anything like a Russell Wilson then they could go pretty far, it doesn't matter how much or how little the fans care.

It's just that when UNC has a good team, it seems as though nobody cares, including fans, students, and sometimes even players when basketball season starts. They may have a good team, but I still think the Coastal division goes through Blacksburg or ATL.

I've been following them the last couple of years, my brother and sister in law are UNC fans, even though she is ECU alum. The Tar Heels are one of those teams that seems to be really close to something big, but cant get over that hump. Davis I think has done an excellent job down their, before football was just to pass the time before basketball season. Now, it seems they people are jumping on the bandwagon,(ie. Spring Game on ESPN).

Their alot like the Nebraska, in terms that they seem to rise up and play well against oppenents that on paper would be better than them. But on the flip side it seems, they have tendency to play down to their competitions level. I think one year they lost to Duke in the season finale, a win would have won them the division title, I believe. They have pretty solid defense, and their offense has some work to do, but I think once they get some experienced players, they could have a pretty good year.

I dont think its too far fetched for them to win ACC this next year.

I don't think so either. No one picked NU to win the Big12 in 09, but we almost did. UNC has an awesome returning defense, which honestly, is what propelled NU to some wins. I think UNC can do it too.

UNC is getting a lot of hype this year, but like a couple others said, they offensively haven't yet been able to put it together, even though they have the pieces to the puzzle. This might be a terrible comparison, so call me on it if you want, but it seems like for the last 3-4 years they are the Notre Dame of the ACC; a lot of talent, but underwhelming each year on the field. Davis and staff have done a great job of recruiting and have some big time recruits, but it hasn't resulted in more wins.
