Northwestern or Kansas State?

Hooked on Huskers

Who's the first Wildcats nickname and purple colors.........Northwestern or KSU? My wild guess, KSU copycats (no pun intended).

You know .......

The University of Iowa's athletic teams were known as the Cornhuskers before they become the Hawkeyes
not verified but Des Moines Article

Nebraska history:

Early nicknames for the university's athletic teams included the "Hawkeyes" (which is now associated with the Univ. of Iowa), the "Antelopes", the "Old Gold Knights", the "Bugeaters" and the "Mankilling Mastodons". (WIKI source)

I love "Mankilling Mastodons" !!

Well, since KSU was known as the Aggies until 1920, (This is why the four square blocks of fun in Manhattan is known as "Aggieville) I would go with NW being first

Edit: KSU was first -

Northwestern Wildcats, changed from the "Purple" in 1924

Mankilling Mastodons? I think that's the first I ever heard of that one. But I wouldn't be surprised. Back then teams seemed to change nicknames almost weekly.

I actually like that one quite a lot!
