Anthony Blue still hurting; offensive playbook condensed
Naturally, a lot of the same old, same old is being said at Big 12 Media Days in Kansas City, but a few interesting nuggets have emerged, aside from that Matt Slauson is currently wearing pants with a Size 40 waist.
Among them:
*** Cornerback Anthony Blue, on the mend from an ACL tear, probably won't be ready to go when fall camp starts in two weeks.
"The timetable on that I'm not sure, but he has started to get over the hump," Husker coach Bo Pelini said. "He's moving forward and making progress, but I don't think he's ready to go quite yet."
*** Pelini said no sure decision has been made about which side of the ball Lincoln Southwest grad Baker Steinkuhler will play, but offensive lineman Matt Slauson said so far he's spent a lot more time working with the defensive line, almost exclusively.
"That's kind of an ongoing evaluation," Pelini said of Steinkuhler's status. "He's had a couple tweaks in his back. He's had some things going on, but it's a great problem to have because he can have some success on either side of the ball."
*** Pelini said offensive coordinator Shawn Watson is condensing the playbook from what it was last year. "I have a lot of confidence in Shawn and the whole offensive staff," Pelini said. "He understands very much what I believe in defensively and that is that the best ideas are things players can execute. ... They've had a lot of offense (here). We still have a lot of offense. ... I just think he’s trying to do things that make players more comfortable and confident. ... Believe me, he still has plenty of weapons. It’s not like we’re going to be in a game and come out with four or five plays."
Last year, Bill Callahan typically went into a games with about 250 plays available and they'd run about 60 of them. Watson doesn't plan to have nearly as many plays available for each game.
*** Asked by someone how he plans to instill aggressiveness in his team, Pelini said: "It's about attitude, about how you do things and what you demand of your players. You just don't yell at a kid and make them tougher. It's a culmination of things. At some point you as a staff have to decide where you want to be and in everything you do, from the meetings to the drills you have and how you make them finish things, everything has to add up to what you want the end product to look like."
*** About the preseason Big 12 picks, which have Nebraska third in the North, Pelini said: "I don’t worry about that. I don’t really care where they pick us. We do the right things and that will all take care of itself."
