NU Football: Husker routine usual

Some tidbits I found interesting:

The World-Herald contacted officials at 13 nationally prominent football programs Wednesday. All 13 said their teams practice in full pads at least one day a week...

"When you put on full pads, you get a little bit more cutting, a little bit more lower body work, but when you're in half pads, you can get just as much done. Every pro team in the NFL practices in half a pack." (that last statement makes me wonder if Callahan isn't still stuck in NFL mode to some degree)

And finally, a coach who is taking some blame for the way his players played (and a little contradictory to Callahan's "NFL" statement.

Defensive line coach Buddy Wyatt, who said his players were "embarrassed" Saturday, was happy with the change to full pads.

"I'm a line coach," he said. "I can get a whole lot more done."

Wyatt said he thought at the time that Nebraska's pre-USC practices were physical enough, "but in hindsight, I feel I let my guys down because I wasn't as demanding as I needed to be."

NFL players, Wyatt said, always practice in half pads.

"Obviously," he said, "we're not the NFL."

The logic is that by the time they've reached college, they should know how to tackle, so they don't need to wear full pads all the time. After last week, I think that it's fair to say that either 1) our players really didn't know how to tackle when they got here, or 2) our coaches have taught them a far less effective way to do it.

For the record, I think it's option 2.

Hopefully the one day of full pads per week sticks. Not news, but you play like you practice, guess someone should have let SC know we were goin' half rack.
