NU Kicking Camp to Feature Former Huskers

Nebraska’s 2006 Big Red Football School will once again feature outstanding opportunities for instruction for youth ages eight and above. Included in Nebraska’s summer camps will once again be a Kicking Academy for those players who want to specialize in special teams. The 2006 Kicking Academy will have two sessions and will feature several former Husker greats as instructors.
The first session of the Kicking Academy will take place on Friday, June 23 and will be for those entering grades 9 and 10. The second session of the kicking camp will take place on Saturday, June 24 and will be open to those players entering grades 11 and 12. The Nebraska staff will direct the camp, led by first-year assistant Shawn Watson and graduate assistant coaches Jon Osterhout and Keith Heckendorf. In addition to the current members of the Husker staff, several other individuals will be involved with instruction at the Kicking Academy.
Josh Brown
Former Husker assistant coach Dan Young and five of his pupils with NFL playing experience will be on hand for the camp. Young directed Nebraska’s kickers and punters from 1986 to 2002, and Nebraska had great special teams success during that time. Seven of the top 10 individual punting averages occurred under Young’s direction and the punters who own the top five career averages all played under Young. Young also directed place-kickers Kris Brown and Josh Brown who rank first and third in all-time scoring at Nebraska.
Both Kris Brown and Josh Brown will also be part of the instructional staff at the camp. Kris is entering his eighth season in the National Football League in 2006, and his fifth season with the Houston Texans. Josh Brown is entering his fourth season with the Seattle Seahawks and was an alternate on the NFC Pro Bowl squad after an outstanding 2005 season with the NFC champion Seahawks.
In addition, three of the best punters in school history will also be part of the camp staff. Sam Koch completed his eligibility in 2005, and recorded a Nebraska single-season record by averaging 46.51 yards per kick a year ago. A native of Seward, Neb., Koch was recently the first punter selected in the 2006 NFL Draft, as he was taken in the sixth round by the Baltimore Ravens.
Koch’s predecessor, Kyle Larson, has enjoyed two successful seasons in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals. Prior to his NFL career, Larson was Nebraska’s starting punter from 2001 to 2003 and was a first-team All-American in 2003. He ranks third in school history with a career punting average of 43.67 yards per attempt.
Bill Lafleur is the third punter with NFL experience who will work the camp. Lafleur was Nebraska’s starting punter in 1998, and averaged 44.94 yards per attempt, the fourth-best single-season average in school history. Lafleur went on to play two seasons in the NFL, splitting the 2002 season between San Diego and San Francisco and starting for the 49ers in 2003. He also played for Barcelona of NFL Europe in 2001 and 2002.
The final camp instructor with NFL experience is Randy Brown, generally regarded as one of the top kicking instructors in the National Football League. Brown has coached, scouted and consulted with numerous NFL and Division I college teams during his career, and is currently a kicking consultant for the Philadelphia Eagles
