Why is basketball the "second" sport? I assume that BB only covers men's BB anyway. Hey, why not baseball? Vollyball? Soccer? Oh well :)

Because Football and Basketball (mens) are the only sports nation-wide to sell significant tickets, memorobilia, concessions, etc. throughout the year. They are also responsible for the majority of $$$ made through television, radio, shoe and apparel contracts...not to mention the $$$ generated in donations/fundraising.

Those are the only two sports that actually make money for the university, at least they were, not for sure about how volleyball has done finacially over the past couple of years for us.

i'm not sure that i agree with the author's criteria for determining the best "two sport" schools. under his system, school that dominates one sport but is horrible at the other gets a respectable rating. case in point is Illinois, which is listed number 42. they dominate basketball, but their football program is a joke (they've won like one conference game in five years). that's not a sign of a good "two sport" school. i would say that nebraska, with a weak basketball team, and a mediocre (though rebuilding) football team, over the last few years is more of a two sport school than illinois.
