University of Nevada athletic director Cary Groth announced several high-profile additions to the Wolf Pack’s football schedule during the 37th annual Governor’s dinner on Friday.
Groth said Nevada will play at Nebraska in 2007 and at Florida State in 2008. She is also working on a deal to play the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in either 2009, ’10 or ’11.
“We’re really excited because we’re going to play a competitive Division IA schedule,” Groth said. “It’s very similar to what other universities do to move their programs to regional and national prominence.”
Groth said playing programs with national followings should help recruiting efforts also.
“It puts Nevada on the map,” she said.
The Wolf Pack had previously announced a home-and-home series with Northwestern starting in 2006.
Groth said Nevada also has a four-game package with Colorado State starting next season, but is seeking to push back two of the games.
“We’re looking at pushing those years, two and three, apart to give us room to do some other scheduling,” Groth said. “We want ’07 and ’08 to push back to ’10 and ’11. It opens up more opportunities there.”
Groth said she is also talking to Illinois and Iowa State and some other SEC schools.
“Our program should be competitive at that time to compete against those teams,” Groth said.
