Objective View of VT Game

I'm new to the board and to Nebraska. I've lived in 4 states and two foreign countries before here. I've never paid much attention to college football, but have decided to check it out since I live here now where it's such a big deal. Although I haven't followed college football, I've been an avid NFL fan since 1971, my team being the Dallas Cowboys.

I caught the last half of the VT game last night. In case you were wondering whether or not your perception of the officiating was colored by a pro-Husker bias, let me offer an objective opinion. That late hit call in the 4th quarter when the Huskers had them stopped was among one of the worst and most costly penalties that I've ever seen in football. I can't judge whether the subsequent unsportsmanlike conduct was a good call because I wasn't on the sidelines and couldn't hear what was being said or if the ref warned him. I do no that Coach Pelini had good cause to be upset. If all that happened was he got upset and let his feelings be known, there should have been no unsportsman penality.

But as for that late hit call, I've never seen a worse call in my history of watching football. I've seen some that were equally bad, but none worse.

In any event, maybe I'll check out Husker Football some more now that I live here.

yeah, i think those two calls were the end of the game. That was some bullsh-t but thats all part of the game. Let's say if Swift didn't fumble the ball of the last play. Who's to say that Nebraska couldn't score?

I've done my share of football watching, pro and college. I can usually tell when a flag is coming, or if a flag should have been thrown. Last night is an example of when a flag should not have been thrown. Could that have affected the outcome of the game? Absolutely. Did we lose the game because of a questionable call? Can't even know.

the flag wasn't a deal breaker; bo losing his cool and getting the additional unsportsmanlike conduct was probably the final nail.

again, osborne knew he was getting a firecracker with bo so this was bound to happen sometime.

Bo said he was surprised that his flag came without much of a warning...but he was also getting pretty emotional, and I think the ref probably just wanted to keep it under control.

atleast he didnt go all "Woody Hayes" on the ref

IMHO, there should have been a couple of flags for hits on the sideline during the game. My dad pointed out one on Ganz that I didn't see. I saw one of VT's QB that COULD have been called a series or two before their final TD drive. Coach Beemer was going beserk on the sidelines and I mentally thought he will get a 'payback call' and I was right.

Remember there was a questionable non call against Nebraska for a pass interference late in the New Mexico State game? The NMS coach was jumping up and down and was in the face of the refs! I vividly remember it and told those around me that he was probably right and watch for a payback call.

Sure enough, there was a close call against NMS for pass interference. And then the ref went over and picked it up and waved it and said, no penalty. Paybacks during a game are a part of the game.

When I saw the flag fly against Bo, I assumed it was it going to be a sideline warning as he was clearly outside the box...he must have been on the refs cases all night and enough was enough. He'll learn on where the grey line meets the black line. This is the reason I attend some of the best matchup games in person - you don't get to watch 'gamemanship' from a tv screen or listen to "B or C team" announcers now covering our games.

Hope you didn't have a number to call at the bottom of your post for a free check for $1 million, because you lost me at Dall-a$$ Cowgirls. ;)

i thought it was a bad call, but it was accentuated by the timing. In that situation, a penalty either way is going to have pretty big consequenses on the end of the game, so you have to be 100% and it needs to be bad intent or flagrant to necessitate the call. I'm not saying that you don't throw flags near the end of a game like Colorado fans were saying a few years back, I'm just saying that borderline ones like that you don't do.

That said it isn't the worst call I've seen this year, but I was fuming mad just like Bo, and while looking back the penalty he got might have hurt us nearly as much, I can't blame him at all.

I think it was Peterson that fumbled on the last drive.

You must have missed the Missouri Colorado game of a few years back...

Actually, from another objective viewpoint, my first reaction was "there's a flag". I mean, the VT guy was on the ground face down, 4 or 5 yards out of bounds and next thing I see is Suh going into him headfirst. Pretty clear to me.

And later, Pelini said he didn't see the play. Big mistake for him to call the ref what he did. 24 penalty yards one on play....

i think Bo was referring to Suh's 2nd personal foul penalty shortly after. When the official on the field was announcing the result of the flag you could hear Bo screaming over the officials PA mic!! :clap

Appreciate that post Klondike Cat, I was raving about that call, and honestly I didn't mind that bo was that pissed. kinda made me glad he was standing up for his players who did what they needed to do to get the job done.
