Asked if what Nebraska used in the Holiday Bowl is what we’ll see in the future, Watson said, “Absolutely. We’ve spent all of our time and all of our energy on being a spread-run team.” He said it’s a spread-run game that is option-oriented — be it a zone-read game, option game or a combination. The key is being diverse, he said.
“What’s happened in college football is defenses are getting onto the spread game,” he said. “But when you mix it up, and you have the versatility to put in a new deal every week — but to your kids it’s not necessarily new — that becomes a challenge for a defense because they don’t know.”
Bottom line, “We want to have a ball-control offense that has big strike-ability,” Watson said.
* When Husker head coach Bo Pelini says he wants the offense to be physical in nature, he means it. Said defensive coordinator Carl Pelini: “I think Bo realized about midseason who he wants us to be. He looked at me the other day and said, ‘We’re going to have the most physical spring football. We’re going to go good against good. And when we come out of spring, we’re going to be the most physical team in the country.’”
