International Man of Mystery
The second game of the new season for the Huskers finds them still searching for solutions on defense. The young guys got torched last week by Wyoming and Brett Smith to the tune of 600 yards and 34 points, and needed a final defensive stand as time expired to salvage the win.

Was last week's game the result of a phenomenal performance by Smith and the Cowboys, or yet more signs of problems for the Blackshirts?

We'll have a little better answer to this question in a few hours. Southern Miss comes to Lincoln for the second year in a row featuring a team who's lost 13 straight games - this after a 12-1 2011 campaign, no less.

Gone is Ellis Johnson, fired after one season. Todd Monken now helms the Golden Eagles ship and quarterback Allan Bridgford runs the show on field. Last week Bridgford threw for 377 yards and one TD against Texas State, while receiver Rickey Bradley gained 193 yards on seven receptions.

The Golden Eagles defense gave up only 215 yards to Dennis Franchione's Texas State Bobcats, but lost the game nonetheless.

Southern Miss would love nothing more than to end their losing streak in grand style. The Huskers won't have an easy time of it if they don't bring their best game.

Let's lace 'em up and play some football.

Trivia: Todd Monken is a former Big 12 offensive coordinator (Okie Lite), just like Dave Christensen (Mizzou).

Do I think this matters? No. I expect we'll kick SoMiss to the curb and get on with the season.

Huskers put it together today, both sides of the ball and stomp the golden eagles like so much bubble wrap. 52 - 10.
