I know, I know. No sense on dwelling on what could have been. Woulda, coulda, shoulda right. In a game of inches, had we pulled out the win at Wisconsin, we would still have an outside shot at a playoff spot. As it stands now, the CFP is on the brink of chaos.
I pose this question to y'all. What happens if Colorado beats Washington and Virginia Tech beats Clemson?
Even with a loss, I think Alabama is the only team that can say they're in the playoff. Even if they get curb stomped, they have wins over USC, Auburn, Tennessee. Two of those were in ridiculously convincing fashion.
So many other games this weekend have huge stakes if those two games don't go the way they're supposed to. Had we pulled out the win (or the flag was thrown on the DPI), we could be sitting on two huge losses, but wins over Wisky and Penn State with a B1G title. As it stands, all of these teams could argue a spot on the playoff under the right circumstances.
Clemson - wins over Auburn, Florida State, Houston, possibly Virginia Tech; losses to Louisville, possibly Virginia Tech; possible ACC title
Washington - wins over Stanford, Washington State, Utah, possibly Colorado; losses to USC, possibly Colorado; possible PAC-12 title
Wisconsin - wins over LSU, Nebraska, Iowa, possibly Penn State; losses to Ohio State, Michigan, possibly Penn State; possible B1G title
Penn State - wins over Ohio State, Iowa, possibly Wisconsin; losses to Michigan, Pitt, possibly Wisconsin; possible B1G title
Ohio State - wins over Michigan, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Nebraska; loss to Penn State; no conference/division title
Michigan - wins over Penn State, Wisconsin, Colorado; losses to Iowa, Ohio State; no division/conference title
Colorado - wins over Utah, Washington State, Stanford, possibly Washington; losses to Michigan, USC, possibly Washington; possible PAC-12 title
Oklahoma - wins over West Virginia, possibly Oklahoma State; losses to Houston, Ohio State, possibly Oklahoma State; possible Big 12 title
Oklahoma St. - wins over West Virginia, possibly Oklahoma; losses to Central Michigan, Baylor, possible Big 12 title
Western Michigan - wins against nobody of consequence; no losses except the possibility of Ohio; possible MAC title (they'll lose to the Fightin' Frankies anyway)
West Virginia is the only other Power Five team that would have fewer than three losses, but their two losses are to the teams playing for the Big 12 title. So they lose the head-to-head, no conference title, and they haven't logged any good wins.
It's going to be a fun weekend. I'd definitely love seeing Colorado win the conference title, only to have a repeat of 2001. That year they were left out in favor of a team that didn't win its own division, even though they won their own conference. Heck, they'd even be the PAC-12 champion like Oregon was. Then again, they lost to Michigan; much like they lost to Oregon in 2001. Maybe it'll be the bookend to the Solich jinx and we could win our tenth game and actually become a good team again. Or would we need them to actually get in to end it?
