Conference expansion is a hot topic these days, and Smith, appearing at the Centerville Noon Optimist Club on Tuesday, June 8, spent a large portion of his 30-minute speech discussing the matter.
While he wouldn’t identify potential new league members, he acknowledged the media have been on target when mentioning schools such as Texas, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Missouri and Rutgers as possible candidates.
“We’re looking at expansion. I don’t have a clue what we’ll do,” Smith told a crowd of 100-plus at the Yankee Trace golf course banquet center. “All the schools you read about in the papers, they’re all in play. I imagine something will come in the summer time frame. Probably 60-90 days out , we’ll have the best picture of what it will look like.
