Old Memories

Although this isn't a bowl topic, this time of year certainly brings out the memories of the ancient past. I was thinking about the time (I was a frosh at Nebraska Wesleyan) my Dad and I went to Memorial Stadium in '59 and watched the Huskers upset the Soonerw and break a long Big 8 steak of consecutive wins. We were amazed that it happened. Regardless of that outcome, they were the smoothest looking offense I've ever seen. It was like a ballet. The players never stopped more than a second in the hudde or at the line. The goal posts were torn out after the game and paraded down "O" Street. Later, I read that the sound track to Ben Hur was recorded in the stadium that day!

Dad attended NU in '29 and watched some great Army and ND teams, while trying to earn a few pennies selling concessions in order to stay in school. The Depression forced him out and back to the farm in the Gurley/Sidney area.

I wondered what old memories some of you may have from a game in Memorial Stadium that goes back awhile, maybe before the modern era of Devaney or before Osborne. It seems a long time ago that I listened (no TV) to the ill-fated Gotham bowl broadcast when we beat George Mira/Miami.
