Vera Cruz, IN -- A former clerk-treasurer faces theft charges after investigators said he paid himself and his wife more money than was in the town budget.

Prosecutors filed 21 counts of theft against former Vera Cruz Clerk-Treasurer Jeffrey W. Patterson, 45, this week in Wells Circuit Court.

Patterson was clerk-treasurer of the town about 25 miles south of Fort Wayne from June 2004 to September 2005.

The town of 54 people has an annual budget of $4,500, and Patterson's annual salary was $1,250. But following an audit by the State Board of Accounts, investigators said Patterson overpaid himself more than $7,000.

His wife, Frankie Patterson, who worked as the town's utility clerk, was overpaid by about $800, the audit found.

Prosecutors also allege that Patterson used town utility money to buy about $2,000 worth of equipment for his archery business.
