OWH & LJS articles on Bo to OSU rumors

Within hours of news that embattled Ohio State head coach Jim Tressel had resigned from his job Monday, college football pundits had begun to erect a list of potential successors.
Current Nebraska head coach — and former Buckeye free safety — Bo Pelini was a prominent name on them.

There's at least one critical question to consider as Bo Pelini-to-Ohio State speculation begins and perhaps persists for months to come:
Are you sure he'd want the job?

I don't regard that as an automatic.

One thing that favors Bo Pelini staying at Nebraska is the "family" issue. Based on this article written when Bo was hired as head coach, Mary Pat and the kids may have a say in the matter. His kids are at an age that if I was confronted with the same decision with my kids at the same age, I probably wouldn't move.

At the time, Osborne told The World-Herald that the pay raise was due in part to Miami’s — and other teams Osborne wouldn’t name — interest in Pelini.
TO's a freakin' genius

Why would Bo want to go to a school that is going to be hammered with post-season bans, scholarship limits and a slew of other NCAA penalties? Bo is a no-nonsense guy and all of that seems like a bunch of nonsense he wouldn't want to deal with.

The best tOSU can do right now is find a lesser name coach that is willing to deal with the issues. Best case scenario is they keep the interim if he puts together an above average season.

Ohio State is the the better family job not to mention the best job in the Big Ten. Bo is from Ohio, think grandparents. Ohio is fertile recruiting area, less travel time chasing recruits and more time at home with family. Bo's only been in Lincoln a few years, no roots there yet. I don't think Ohio State wants Bo but if they do, watch out.

With the NCAA looming over your school like a 500-ton boulder, I don't think Nebraska is the school that needs to "look out."

I'm with you on that.

How the hell is Pelini's buyout only $250,000?!?!?!?!?!?! That's like giving the guy away. If he leaves it will be to a school that's majorly relevant with high influence and tradition in college football. And basically what that means is he will go to a school with alot of money, and $250,000 is chump change to those kinds of schools. That number really just blows my mind!!

I thought that too, what was clownahans? Didn't we have to hit the reserves pretty deep to get him out?

That maybe WAS the case. Every IS in your post you need to change to WAS. With what's about to happen at twasOSU, those things are not going to be so true anymore.

It's not going to be a better family job anymore(scrutiny), it's not going to be the best job in the B1G(sanctions and penalties), it's going to be much harder to recruit so will have to travel more(hard to believe an untruthful school). And Bo has put down roots in Nebraska not only with family, but with recruiting and the areas we already recruit. Just add on Ohio, Pennsylvania, etc to make our recruiting that much more powerful.

So, I would say Nebraska is better all the way around.

Would you really want the reason someone stays employed under you being solely that they have a huge penalty for leaving? or to have to pay someone huge amounts if you want them out the door? Buyouts seem like a pretty stupid premise in the first place.

Let me start by saying that I am a Bo Pelini fan. We have been down this road before, especially whenever HB goes overboard with people wanting him gone for his sideline demeanor. I like Bo and want him at NU ......period.

But, I dare to ask.... What has he DONE to merit his name being thrown into the conversation. Really the ONLY reason his name is on a list is because he "played" at OSU.

I can't imagine OSU gunning for Bo at this point. I am sure they are saying "we are THE OHIO STATE UNVIVERSITY"....and they are going after a proven HC.

There are many names with Ohio ties that have done much more than Bo. I am talking 1-2 National Championships, Super Bowl Wins, Conference Titles... Hate to say it, but Bo hasn't even won a conference title yet. How can he possibly be mentioned with the likes of Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, John Gruden??

Once again, I am not down playing what Bo has started here, but just pointing out that he would definitely be a plan B or C at best. I think the only way he gets a look is if the other guys turn down the opportunity for one reason or another. I feel fairly safe that Bo will be at Nebraska for a few years to come. JMO

Buy out and fired are two different things. If we fired Bo, he would get a lot more then $250k from NU.

One of the contributing factors to him being listed as high as 2nd in some peoples lists of potential candidates, is the fact that he's an "Ohio guy". If TO hadn't hired Bo, we'd have wanted a "Nebraska guy".
