Collins' so good, he cracked the two-deep that two positions. Collins and VV inside will be a test for any OL. Interesting they have Stoltenberg at DT. I know he played that position in spring practice, but the talk about him has always been guard or DE. New regime, new ideas.

I doubt it. No need to.
Besides the fact there isn't a DE on the roster that's proven he can pressure the QB consistently.
Not saying we need to a lot, but he's basically the only proven QB pressure guy we have. VV can collapse a pocket to be fair to him.

I think we all feel pretty good about McMullen, Collins, & Valentine. I think the coaching staff has been vocal that Williams is solid as the #3 guy at DT. We have also heard Stoltenberg's name enough to think he is probably the #4 guy if not Maurice. The DE is the position we really have blanks at. Will Daishon Neal play as a TRFR? Yep he will. Will Alex Davis? Only if he gain 10lbs by fall and learns the playbook quickly. I don't think we are going to see this staff making the kids learn all the moves and techniques to see the field. I think they will ask (1) does he know the plays and know what he needs to do? (2) does he communicate well (3) can he run and be durable? 1.2.3.... go. At 225lbs and only 1 year of football under his belt, you have to think Davis will require a RSFR year but I think Neal plays immediately at 250lbs, 6'7" and 4.8 speed. There is just too much need for speed and pass rush for him not to.

Gangwish will be consistent and will play a lot. You'd think we'd have a real opportunity to secure some solid commits for the 2016 class at this position with such a weak depth chart and so many open spots.

I feel pretty good about our front 4 in the run game, but pass game is very worrisome.

I don't think Neal plays unless he just tears up fall camp. Hopefully Freedom can round into a pass rusher.

Right, but their isn't a DT on the roster outside of the starters that are proven either. So why weaken the inside just to strengthen the outside. The only way Collins gets moved to a DE in certain spots is if they run a 3-4, and that's not a true DE anyway.

Also, we can't say he's the only proven guy to pressure the QB and just automatically think that translates to the skills of pass rushing off the edge. I would much rather see M. Newby be used again in those situations rather than move our biggest strength on defense to a position that makes him use a less effective skill set for him.

More talent at DT then DE, imo. Newby is a good point but we are so thin at LB I'm not sure about taking away his reps there.

I know it doesn't automatically translate to the edge, but he's the most physically dominant specimen we have on the Dline so it might be worth a shot for a few snaps here and there.

Either way Collins is gunna see plenty of "help" from opposing Olines till someone steps up.

I think one or both of the Davis twins could play at DE this year. They are both extremely athletic and a tad undersized at DT as true freshmen. They'll grow into DTs by year 2, but they could really help us next year at DE.

I understand what you are getting at, and I think where we differ is our thinking on how much actual talent we have in the middle. I don't think it's there after VV and MC. I see potential behind them, but its not proven talent just yet, imho.

I think we have a pretty good front 4, but the people behind them are just unknown potential to me. With the only exception being MAYBE Kevin Maurice, but even still, I gotta see it before I take away Collins from the interior.

Also, there is a reason NU doesn't pay me the big bucks to make those decisions.

I humbly disagree.

Hey me either buddy! I really like what Williams did last year but health is always a question with him. Guess we just agree to disagree, but GBR!

I disagree with your disagree. Both are very athletic and could play DE right now at their weight. No reason they couldn't, especially if Collins is listed as a back-up DE.

Still puzzled over the Stoltenberg move to DT with the atrocious depth we have at DE. Watching the spring game, he looked like a DE (long and lean) trying to play DT. He needs to add another 20-30 lbs to be a DT.
