Pederson in fantasy land.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -- Nebraska athletic director Steve Pederson pledged his support Monday night to Bill Callahan and the rest of the football coaching staff in the wake of a 35-point loss to Missouri.

"What I've tried to do is be supportive and encouraging and make sure our coaches and players know we have tremendous confidence in them, belief in them, and we're doing all we can to help them succeed," Pederson said on his weekly radio show on the Husker Sports Network. "We just don't leave people hanging out. That's not my way. We're keeping them pepped up and focused, our players in particular. It's important that they get rejuvenated."

Pederson did not take calls from listeners.

Fan unrest has been fueled by four straight uninspired defensive performances. The Cornhuskers (4-2, 1-1 Big 12) have allowed 600 yards in two of their past three games and have surrendered 40 points in three games for the first time since 1943.

The Huskers were booed in the second half of a 41-40 win over 23-point underdog Ball State. They beat Iowa State 35-17 the following week, but the defense was on the field for 102 plays against the Big 12's bottom-ranked offense.

Missouri's Chase Daniel passed for a career-high 401 yards, and the Tigers gashed the Huskers for more than 600 yards while beating them 41-6. Nebraska's offense failed to score a touchdown for the first time in 33 games.

Pederson said he has tried to maintain a "steady hand" as the Huskers have struggled.

"First and foremost, you have to believe you're going the right direction," he said. "As we all know, there are going to be wins and losses. Earlier in my career, I got maybe more emotional and reactive than I should have. Over the last seven or eight years, I've tried to keep that a little bit in check."

Pederson said the coaches and players have high character, "and I believe these are times where you call on your own character to get you through these things."

He said it's important for the coaches and players to unify during tough times.

"I've always believed some of the most memorable experiences you have in athletics are when you go through the toughest times together," Pederson said.

Yeah don't mention anything about the fans coming together and standing behind their team to help them out. Shows he doesn't give a crap.

Yes, because we all know believing something makes it true. If you're in Pederson's sinking ship, it probably is more comfortable to believe that this will all work out in the end. But I got news for him and the few Callahaners with balls enough to maintain your errant ways: this is a dream, a fiction, a pleasant story Pederson tells himself (and you will have to tell yourself) in order to block out the harsh and sad reality that he has single-handedly ruined one of the greatest football dynasties in the sport. I would have rolled the dice with Solich and Pelini had I known the program would sink this far. The results might have been the same, but somehow I think on defense we would have managed to stay in it.

I take no joy in any of this, but it is my sincere hope that Callahan truly manages to destroy this team by the end of the season, losing nearly all our remaining games and by a large margin. This way at least we may be able to rid ourselves of him soon, and not have to suffer through many more years of mediocrity with nothing but more bullsh#t and excuses to comfort us in the future.

You call what happened Saturday mediocrity. Sh!t, that was well below mediocrity. If we were mediocre with Solich, then I will take mediocre over this any day of the week. I was a Callahan supporter up until about 10 o'clock Saturday night. I defended him to the naysayers after the USC game. I defended him after the loss toes to Auburn and Oklahoma last year. Hell, I defended him his first year, when dailey was sucking at QB. Now, I wish he would just go back to whatever hole he crawled out of, and take Pud with him.

Looks like they'll be a lot of these memorable experiences for the next few years. I just can't wait.

:yeah :yeah

THESE PLAYERS DESERVE BETTER.

Yes, they are memorable, but not in a good way.

My idea of a Nebraska "memorable experience" is Tommie Frazier and Co. smashing Florida's face in during the '95 Fiesta bowl. This garbage team doesn't deserve my time, let alone a precious portion of my cranial capacity.

unbelievable words that come from someone who claims to be a fan. how can anyone truly hope that their team is destroyed and loses all of the remaining games by a large margine

you are a fair weather fan, that jumps ship at the first sign of trouble.

Ah, yes, the Koolaide Man cometh. I expected something like this might come up.

My position actually stems from a fandom deeper than the fickle week to week emotions of some. I have come to realize, as most are beginning to on this board, that Callhan will do this whether I wish it or not. He and his incompetent staff have already destroyed what was left of the program after Solich, and if you need any further evidence than has been catalogued and demonstrated so far, you have my pity. Seeing as Callahan has an extention along with that cancerous AD Pederson, the likelihood of removing him is dismal...provided the storm does not worsen to the point of crisis. The best chance we have of ridding ourselves of the Callahan disease is to have it all but kill the host. As painful as it will be to watch, it is the quickest and most realistic way to give our program hope again.

At no point is my fanship of Nebraska in question. I have nothing but the deepest love and commitment to this program and our tradition. However this team and coaching staff are the worst we've seen in decades. The coaching is mainly the issue, as I believe a proper staff could probably get a lot more out of the talent than we've seen. The best course of action at this point is to tear the bandaid off and let the blood flow. Only at near-death will a transfusion be given––if we're fortunate. The fans have little power to bring about change directly. Even the options we do have will likely be met with little resolve. Because of this I believe the most logical sequence of events which will lead to success is a valley of unprecedented purportions. I hope it occurs quickly, so we can get back on track with real coaches, players that don't quit, and A TEAM that plays mean, inspired football.

Huh. I see someone that is fed up with the lies and bullsh*t. If he was the type to jump ship at the first sign of trouble he would've bailed in 2004. Callahan has had more than a fair chance up to this point. Anyone who doesn't see things now for what they are, never will, and they are part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Is that... no... it can't be a smidge of regret, can it?
