University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman knows a lot of Nebraskans pay no attention to what he does beyond his impact on their beloved football team.

The guy who got the Cornhuskers into the Big Ten.

Though a scholar at heart, Perlman totally understands it.

Football is visible and it's important and not just in Nebraska,'' he said. It connects us.''

But Nebraskans who haven't looked at what's happening at UNL beyond the gridiron have missed a lot over the past decade. Higher education observers say Perlman has presided over nothing short of a campus renaissance one that likely made the move to the Big Ten even possible.

It's great to see the university doing this well, but the USDA research center not being funded could be a major setback to the next decade being as good for the university as this one was. I'm worried about the whole innovation campus becoming a boondoggled road to nowhere.
