Place kickers

Five-Star Recruit
Word out of camp is that Congdon and Dyches are neck and neck. This is odd I think given last years stats:

The following is a copy of rojo's comment on another forum:

Our Field Goal kicking: The worst last year. To among the best for '05?

Last fall, our field goal kicking really stunk.

I. 2004: Big 12 Field Goal Kicking Percentages

1. Texas A&M........... 13/14 .929

2. Kansas State........ 13/15 .867

3. Colorado............ 23/29 .793

4. Baylor.............. 11/15 .733

5. Texas............... 12/17 .706

6. Oklahoma State...... 11/17 .647

7. Missouri............ 11/19 .579

8. Kansas.............. 12/21 .571

9. Oklahoma............ 9/17 .529

10 Iowa State.......... 11/21 .524

11 Texas Tech.......... 7/14 .500

12 Nebraska............ 6/12 .500 [ DeAngelis 4/9; Dyches 2/3]

.

Is the info out of camp meant to stir up competition, rather than provide us with the real skinny?

KICKER BATTLE: The linebacker position isn't the only one with a nip-and-tuck battle. Junior David Dyches and freshman Jordan Congdon are in tight competition for place-kicker duties, with walk-on Eric Lueshen not far behind, said kickers coach Scott Downing. "Due to the fact Eric missed a couple of days with an injured leg, Jordan and David probably have a little bit of an edge right now," Downing said. Of Dyches and Congdon, Downing said, "Both of them remain very, very consistent, particularly up to about 42 yards. They're hitting the ball very well. I think Jordan has made the adjustment to kicking off the grass fairly easily ... We see him getting the ball up more and more every day. David, quite honestly, has had a pretty good camp. He's striking the ball very, very well, probably better than at any time last year."

Sounds good to me. We need a guy(or two) that can be called upon and make 40 yarders as if it were nothing. I don't care if it is Dyches or Congdon, just put it through the uprights when called upon! DeAngelis is probably the worst kicker to come through Nebraska that I can recall.

Hasn't Dyches started out really well the past two seasons and then died out as the season has gone on??
His freshman campaign, he actually fared pretty well to start. The problem with him has been getting the ball up. He doesn't get a lot of 'air' under his kicks right off the ground, so they have a good chance of being blocked.

Dyches was the #12 rated kicker in the nation coming out of HS, and had an offer from Ohio State.

Last year I don't think he was the #1 kicker till the Oklahoma game. In 2003, he started off real well and faded down the stretch as you eluded to.

He didn't hardly kick last year, coach was in love with sandro for some reason. Dyches came in a made a kick after deangelis missed a couple and then what do you know sandro was back in the next game. Dyches did falter his first year down the stretch.

I'm with you on this one Benard. I wish they'd had played him more last year.

Maybe Sandro was great in practice of something. He is tearing up the CFL this year...not that that means anything. I would be interested to hear why from the coaches themselves, because it was obvious last year that Dyches was better with the limited amount of chances that he got.
