Sneads, FL -- A murderer and burglar who were thought to have escaped from a north Florida prison were found early Monday hiding in a building inside the compound, having never made it outside the gates, officials said.

Convicted murderer David Duquette, 25, and convicted burglar Michael Fitzgerald, 27, were reported missing from Apalachee Correctional Institution early Saturday. Both men offered minimal resistance in the recapture.

The state Corrections Department plans a review of the incident and both men may face additional charges, officials said. They will likely be moved to Florida State Prison in Starke, a higher-security facility.

State officials originally said witnesses spotted the men about 1 p.m. Saturday at a truck stop near Marianna, but that turned out to be wrong.

Fitzgerald recently sent a letter to relatives saying he was the target of a prison gang and he included instructions on how to conduct his funeral, family members said.

It said he was beaten by fellow inmates for his radio, according to his grandmother, Jean Fitzgerald. It also said he wanted to be cremated and have his ashes placed in the same urn as his mother's.

"Thing is that more than likely I'll either catch more time for defending myself or get killed before it's all over with," the letter said. "It's just not right."

Fitzgerald was serving a 15-year sentence for burglary and five years for battery on an officer, introduction of contraband into a correctional facility and escape.

Duquette had been incarcerated at the prison since June 2002 following his conviction for second-degree murder in Citrus County.
