Prophetic comments from last season

I know that Corey Raymond caught a lot of flak for his comments, but after last nights woodshed they ring true. Maybe he did know something none of us really wanted to admit. The highlighted part, at least to me, speaks of the staff as much as it does the kid. We were running smash mouth power and UCLA was wilting, then Beck went all pocket passer (like Wisky) and I do not think we ran again. Need to find and/or get the speed and athletes on the field. Kind of like "Remember the Titans" when they send in Peety and Sunshine Ronny Bass in on D. The other team was too fast so wiley Coach Boone sends in his athletes. Result (great movie) and a win.

“Just be honest,” Raymond said. “Look at them, look at us. It’s pretty obvious.” What did Raymond mean? He didn’t spell it out, but he made veiled criticisms of Nebraska’s personnel. For instance, what did he take from this game going into the offseason?
“Hopefully it helps recruiting. Get athletes.”
Was he encouraged by how NU matched up man-for-man? “Not necessarily.”
Raymond went on to compare the mentality of Southern players versus Nebraska’s players. His guys needed to learn how to punch back once they got “hit in the mouth.”
“You can’t live on what other guys have done in the past around here,” Raymond said. “You have to live on yourself…We’re not Prince. We’re not Eric Hagg. We’re not those guys. We have to do much different things. We have to work harder. We’re not the same athletes as those guys.”

No, he's not wrong, he's just an bad guy. (We're talking about Walter, right? I like lo country.)

You're just hangin' on Corey Raymond's junk these days, aren't you?...
Huh? Not at all. I defended his comments last year from the stand point of them being correct. (never liked him as a hire) Wrong way to get it out ie to the media, but hind sight being 20/20 the guy was spot on. We always say "we don't see what the coaches see" and here is/was a guy that was a coach and made the comments. It probably hastened him to LSU, but it was glaring last night that roughly 66% of our D stunk and he saw a glaring lack of talent. I give the DB's a pass last night. They played well under the circumstances IMO.

Our DBs are not the problem. In my opinion, it's definitely the front seven, but more specifically, the front four. I think our linebackers could be okay if we had at least one or two players on the line that were actually decent. Now, I could be wrong, but it seemed like when our defense was actually able to tackle, it was DBs doing it. Definitely not good.

I agree with you, and as Igetbored216 said above, the problem is more with the front 7. I'm almost to the point where I'd like to see this line-up:

---------- Ankrah--------- Meredith ---------- Caveman -------------

Green-------------------------------------------------------Evans----------------Jean-Baptiste

---------Cooper -------- PJ Smith --------- Compton ----------- H. Jackson

-------------------------------- Stafford---------------------------------

I'm not huge on the 3-4, but we don't have the LB/DL talent right now and we have lots of depth in the secondary.

I would take that alignment. I would rotate in Seisay and Cross. Cross as OLB.

HA! Well I was trying to stay away from guys that we haven't seen play, otherwise I would probably have thrown Charles Jackson, Michael Rose, David Santos, and Mo Seisay in there as well.

I see the logic behind what you guys are proposing, but the idea of a fleet of DB sized players trying to bring down Le'veon Bell makes me nervous as hell.

Raymond was a good coach and an asset to this staff. I'm disappointed that he chose to leave, although I'm also disappointed by the manner of his leaving (not long after explicitly promising not to -- seriously, why do coaches do this?)

I do think his statements after the past bowl game were on the money. A concern he probably should not have aired in the public, but I also think it's something that has been address with our recruiting efforts this current cycle. It's no secret that currently our recruiting approach has undergone a metamorphosis.

Lets face it, like him or not Raymond was right. This may be the slowest and most unathletic defense I've ever seen in my 33yrs as a Husker fan. There's obviously a problem here that needs to be addressed.

Based on the tackling in the first two games, I would be nervous as hell regardless of who is in the game. The athleticism of UCLA made us pay for the mistackles, but there was plenty of horrible tackling against Southern Miss.
