qbs for next year

LINCOLN - First rule in the Bill Callahan school of recruiting quarterbacks: Get all you can now and sort them out later.

Quarterback Zac Taylor in the 2005 Alamo Bowl.

Even as the Nebraska football team moves through spring practice with its QB position in solid condition, the wheels continue to spin behind the scene.

The Huskers face a major change at quarterback after next season. And while Zac Taylor's replacement may be refining his skills right now in Lincoln, be certain that Nebraska will not rely solely Harrison Beck in its planning for 2007.

Evidence of such a strategy exists from Omaha to the talent-rich states of California, Texas and Florida.

"Like I've said before, you cannot have enough of them," Callahan said. "I know we are working hard at it and have identified a lot of quarterbacks already. But it's still a very long process."

Callahan, the Huskers' third-year coach, is known to have offered scholarships to more than a half-dozen junior quarterbacks, including Phillip Bates of Omaha North.

Needs at the position top Nebraska's list in the next recruiting cycle, with only the senior Taylor, plus sophomores Beck, Joe Ganz and Beau Davis on the NU roster

Not to join 'Club Eeyore' but I am becoming increasingly concerned about Beck. Last year is understandable. And this year, I am very pumped up on our Blackshirts, and could understand a QB's struggle. But I've yet to hear any optimism on Beck.

On the contrary though, this article should hardly be representative of Beck's performance in practice. If Beck was throwing for 9000 yards each practice, it doesn't hide the fact that NU really needs QB recruits. This has to be a major focus for this recruiting class, as has been hashed over quite a bit.

He'll get there. Let's not forget Taylor has roughly three years on Beck in being a college quarterback at any level.

Experience is everything for a quarterback in the West Coast offense - knowing and making the reads. I, for one, never expected Beck to come in and take over his first year, and the team really wasn't in a position to get him any minutes - not to mention that they probably wanted to redshirt him anyway.

With Taylor's year, it will be hard for Beck to realistically be expected to seriously challenge for the starting spot. So long as he gets some quality time and has a chance to get some game experience this year, that's about all we can expect.

Dave and AR...

:yeah

I'll support that. I'm not going off my stance that I'm getting concerned, but good points.

The lack of optomisim could just be the coaching staff trying to keep any undue pressure off the guy, also. And it's still realtively early - right now I'm sure most of the media concern is on other positions since we have Taylor. Just a thought.

The thing is next year Beck isn't going to have crap for Play experience because we don't beat anyone bad enough to get him in.

C'mon guys Beck is a sophomore.....i've heard coaches say it takes years for QB's to completely understand the WCO......so lets give him this year to get the playbook down and then start making judgements whether he can understand it or not.......

But man am I glad we have Zac.... :restore2

Can you see if I am going to win the lottery with that crystal ball you have?

Beck only has 4 and he wasted 1 last year or he should have 5. But that might be a blessing aswell. Sounds like we are going to get 3 for next year, probs 2 frosh and a juco.

Beck is going to be just fine, IMO. I, unlike our buddy Benard, think Beck will get plenty of reps this year because we will have some games in hand. Everytime you hear things about him, nobody ever takes anything away from his physical abilities, in fact I have heard he has gotten better physically. All he needs to work on is accuracy and consistency, both of which can be improved with PRACTICE.

IMO, he will get good reps this year and the transition from 06-07 will be a smooth one.

We have 2 chances for him to play this year unless Taylor gets hurt. Nicholls and Troy.

Next time any of you are at the game you can tell during

warmups Beck has the better arm by far. Just have to get his

reads down with alittle experience.

And we all know how accurate your predictions are, right?

Such, as, oh, your predictions about last season’s record?

Or your prediction about NU’s chances at the NCAA tournament?

Or your prediction that Incognito would clean up his act and have a great last season at Oregon?

Wait a minute - I know! Your uncanny ability to predict bowl winners! Remember this boast?

Given that claim, you must have finished first, right? Uh, no. Second? Nope. Surely you didn’t place out of the money, right? Wrong – not even in the top three.

Given your record, it appears a lock that Beck's going to see a lot of time under center in games this season...
