this is not very scientific but this is the system that i used to determine which confrence was stronger this year between Big 12 and Big 10.
i took the final standings from the coaches poll, sportswriters dont know jack about football, and gave each team points depending where they ended the final standings at.
40 teams recieved votes in the final poll so I awarded the #1 team 40 points, #2 39 points and so on. If a team from each confrence failed to recieve any votes then that team would get 0. Then I added up the total for each confrence and divided that number by 12 which was the total number of teams in the Big 10 and i gave the Big 10 an extra 0 to get to the same total of teams.
here is what i came up with
Big 12
UT----------40
TT----------21
OU---------19
NU----------17
KU-----------7
MU-----------2
ISU----------0
KSU---------0
OSU---------0
CU-----------0
BU-----------0
TAM---------0
total--------106
average-----8.83
Big 10
PSU----------38
OSU----------37
WIS----------26
UM-----------13
IA------------11
NWU----------5
IND-----------0
ILL------------0
MSU----------0
MIN-----------0
PUR-----------0
12th-----------0
total----------130
average------10.83
so because PSU and OSU finished 3 & 4 in the coaches poll that popped their average up a lot, causing me to have to say that the big 10 was the better confrence in poll standings. now if you want to award points to teams that went to bowl, won the bowl and subtract points for teams that lost bowl games then the Big 12 wins big.
food for thought
