Reference Point of Other Teams' Success Against Top 25

...i'm talking about...

losing by 20 to UCLA in 2013 after getting dominated for over 3 quarters of football

losing by 13 to MSU after turning the ball over 5 times and very effectively shooting ourselves in the foot

giving up 63 to ohio state

beat down pretty good by South Carolina

or losing by almost 30 to Michigan

or by 31 to Wisconsin

This goes back to the defense. And we have a defensive coach. You look at the 2009 and 2010 seasons...we played the top 25 teams close. We still lost a few of them, but we were in the game till the end. That's not the case as often anymore. I have a problem w/ those 6, not because of the "L" but because of the way we arrive at the "L". Troubling trend.

This is my point about Pelini critics...the blowouts are the focus. The "troubling trend" has been and is being addressed. Those scores are not news flashes....."most" of us remember them well.

^I'm sorry but until this staff can prove that they can go more than a handful of games without completely peeing down their legs it's going to keep being an issue.

we should compare the margin of defeat - that's what most fans take issue with.
So I had a little free time and went to Huskers.com and here is what I found for Bo's coaching tenure...

This is apparently based on what the opponent was ranked at the time NU played them.

Bo is 9-13 against top 25 teams all time

In the 13 losses, the opponent had an average rank of #10-#11. it came to 10.5 so choose whichever you like. The average margin of loss was 15 points. 14.57 was the actual number.

In the 9 wins, the opponent had an average rank of #17. 17.11 for exact. The average margin of victory was 14 points. 13.55 for exact.

I don't know if that helps or hurts the conversation but I was interested in knowing the answer.

Here is what I used for reference. http://www.huskers.com/SportSelect.dbml?SPSID=3&SPID=22&DB_OEM_ID=100&Q_SEASON=2008
When I look at those numbers, it makes me think we're averaging out at about the 14th best team in the country. Good enough to beat teams ranked 15 or lower, but not good enough to beat teams ranked 13 or higher. If we can get over our turnover and special teams issues, we could and should break into the top 10.

And that's my point with you - the blowouts are his issues. So if we're going to talk about his issues, then we're going to bring up his blowouts. Has "been" addressed? As in past tense? How do you figure? Are you basing that on the lack of blowouts last year, because they were still there. The improvements in turnovers? Because that's still there. The coaches have been addressing these issues for the last 3 seasons, so do you seriously believe they've been addressed without seeing a single snap yet?

Bottom line, we still get blown out twice a season, we are still one of the worst teams in the nation when you talk about turnovers, and we still would get trounced by an 8th grade football team in punt coverage. Until I see a handful of games that prove otherwise, this is the team I know. I don't see practices, I don't sit in the meetings. So until proven otherwise, we're a 2 blowout a year squad, that ranks 100+ in turnovers and can't defend a punt.

Talent solves a lot of issues.

So does coaching.

I'm not real interested in a circular debate.....Pelini coached the 2009 defense.

Those SEC teams play each other. Looking at multiple teams, of course you are going to have losses around. A better metric would be records against OOC top-25 teams/

Point taken but I dont think that's a large enough data pool to to glean any real information from.
I decided to take this challenge. Slow day at the office. I started with Pelini's first season. Also, TAMU, Missouri, and Nebraska I incorporated what their OOC games were based on the conference they were in. Based off of the teams listed here is the breakdown:

Alabama: 6-1.

South Carolina: 7-2

Texas A & M: 3-3

LSU: 7-2

Georgia: 3-6

Florida:4-3

Auburn: 1-2

Missouri: 2-0

Nebraska:0-4
