Nebraska football coach Mike Riley’s contract has been extended by one year through the 2020 season, and NU President Hank Bounds told The World-Herald on Monday evening “I believe we’ll do that again in December.”

“I have great confidence in Mike, to extend his contract to four years,” Bounds said. “I expect us to compete, and I have every confidence that we’ll extend it again in December.”

Bounds said the contract work sends a message.

“If you look across the landscape, contract lengths are all over the place — from three years to a much longer term,” he said. “It was prudent at this time, as a signal, to show to everyone our support of Mike.”

According to Bounds, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Ronnie Green requested a one-year extension for Riley “earlier in the year,” which Bounds approved.

well history has almost completed the callahan cycle-

Either Bounds is banking on Frost lasting that long in CFlorida, or we have no long term plans and just like to give people money as parting gifts.

foolish either way

didn't realize his contract was only extended a year- not the worst thing, I guess you almost need to do that until all the wheels fall off- but if we're 5-7 like I predict and these morons extend his contract another year they will prove themselves stupid

When it comes to Husker football there probably aren't many things Husker fans agree upon, however I will go out on a limb and suggest one thing we all agree on is the need for great athletes and depth in all positions.  While we have some great young men/athletes now, we also have some holes and weaknesses.

With an offensive system like MR's, once a cycle of freshman have come in and developed in the system over a 3, 4, or 5 year period with Jr's and Sophmores behind them who have done the same, it becomes a powerful machine and not just a system.

Anything that helps us attract and get talent is another step in the right direction.  This extension is a strong message to all prospective recruits wanting to play in a pro-style offense who may be concerned about whether the coach and system they commit to will still be in place 3 years form now.  The answer is YES, so hesitate no longer and commit to N today.   GBR

The funniest thing is that it barely means anything. Virtually every FBS head coach is on a 4-5 year contract, or longer. It's just so coaches can tell recruits they'll be there for a kid's whole career. If a coach does get fired, their buyout is more. That's the only other difference.

To summarize: If you love Riley, it doesn't really mean he will be at Nebraska any longer. If you hate Riley, it doesn't really mean he will be at Nebraska any shorter.
