Run the Ball - Stop the Run

We weren't very good at either last year.

But these teams were. And were pretty successful.

That is the key to winning IMO, and I prefer to start with linemen. I would rather have the best OL and DL than the best QB, RB ans CBs.

Those top four teams did everything better.

Three of them had more than 400 passing attempts, too.

A good offensive line can make every playcaller brilliant.

This. So much this. Regardless of what scheme we wish to have, style of QB, athleticism at the skill positions and on D, if our OL sucks, we are screwed....... I am a huge fan of DB play, love watching some power running, but in reality, the wins are built on the backs of guys few can name..... Gotta win in the trenches.

Yes indeed so true but great teams are going to be dam good all over the place (offense and defense and special teams at virtually every position). You can play top ten level ball with a few above average caliber guys here and there but top 4 and champions have no real weaknesses. We are NOT there by any means but hopefully we see more than two or three players who could play for the Buckeyes and or Tide by the end of 2017. I doubt we have ONE player who could start for either team and likely not more than 4 or 5 who would make the 3 deep or travel roster. That says so much. But those two programs are currently on a level well above the rest of the country. Maybe another half dozen programs that have guys who could find roles on those teams but not many others really.

The not so secret secret to winning football. Run the ball, stop the run.
are you saying that running the ball 3 times and then punting is winning football. Having a good OLine so that you can choose to run with effectiveness would be more of a route to winning football. Run attempts were not our issue the past 2 years.

I don't know how you got the bolded from what you quoted.

No. I'm saying do what it takes to run the ball effectively, starting with building a formidable O line.Running the ball when it isn't working just to increase rushing attempts.....that's maybe the stupidest thing I've ever heard. I'm not sure where you got the impression that is what I meant at all.

And since you apparently need clarification, stopping the run does not mean ignoring the pass and allowing 500 through the air. Run the ball, stop the run would mean having stellar line play on both sides of the ball.

Glad I stated that in my post - unlike yourself
It seemed so obvious I felt no need to include it originally. Do we have people running around here proposing that we simply increase rushing attempts and acting like the line play has been acceptable? I haven't seen it.
