Running Backs - What Will We Learn This Spring

Sounds like Riley is looking for the RBs to start seperating themselves in Friday's practice. They'll being installing their third down package and it sounds like they'll be looking for who catches the ball well and is solid in pass pro. As would be expected, that will be key to PT in Riley's system.

A media member noted Adam Taylor looking good in practice so far.

Same guy also noted that a coach from the previous staff told him Taylor would have been playing ahead of Cross last year had Taylor not gotten hurt.

Yeah, I had a feeling that Adam Taylor might be on the cusp of breaking through last year. Instead the only break through was his broken ankle. I'm still looking forward to seeing Taylor on the field. He seems to be a better fit at I-back--size and speed wise--than Cross. /IMHO.

I like the word play.

Newby will probably win the starting spot going into and for, at least, the 1st part of the season. Hopefully Taylor will be a contender by that point. No way we can rely on Cross for the starting role, he doesn't have enough game: isn't fast enough overall and in finding the/a hole. Not a good laterally rusher either.

We will learn how good ameer was and we will rely on our offensive line improving a lot this year or we will have trouble running the football like we have the last few years. I think all of o ur backs do some things well but not sure if any are the total package like our last few backs. Hope newby or Taylor step up. Like newby explosiveness but needs to get more decisive in his running. Taylor lacks the explosiveness that we are used to. Haven't seen enough of him healthy to get a gauge on how effective he could be. Hope injuries don't haunt hiscareer.

Taylor's HS film shows the most complete back on the roster
Exactly. He's the model of RB that the NFL loves. Not a small super shifty 3rd down guy and not a one trick pony big back. His mold is that of a AP/Marshawn type of runner. But we don't know his ability to shed tackles like beastmode.

Somebody explain the Newby love to me please.
Will somebody else explain to me the Adam Taylor love? Look, I'd like to see all of our guys contribute immensely, and I feel we can do some good things with multiple backs but Terrell Newby has proven that he can at least play and stay healthy. Adam Taylor hasn't played a down of live college football. Not a single down. Imani will start with Newby coming off first. Terrell is the one who is not like the others, which will help him. Adam has a lot of ground to make when it comes to experience and trust. He doesn't get skinny very well and his cuts are slow. He runs straight up through the hole sometimes and gets stopped rather easily. Many believed he was hesitant because of his prior injury. He had moments right before he got injured. The best raw talent is Mikale. He doesn't have a glaring weakness and is the one who could jump them all.
