running from the gun

Running from the gunI found this an interesting quote. I was asking Tim Beck about the play of Roy Helu, and while giving his response, he talked about how his running backs had to do some adjusting to the different offensive philosophy we've seen from NU the last two weeks.

Nebraska has gone much more out of the shotgun, eliminating more of the power sets. And the change, Beck said, gave the running backs a whole different look they had to get used to running from.

"The thing that (Helu) has done, really, all of them, is they're learning to become running backs instead of guys just running with the ball. They're becoming more patient and they're understanding blocking schemes," Beck said. "Just like last game, we ran the ball against Iowa State because we understood better than we did against Texas Tech.

"At Texas Tech, we were just running and we were missing holes and we were not cutting where we should have. We were not reading our keys as well and you try to teach them that. But out of the gun, it's a little different than when you're the I-back eight yards deep. Now you're five yards deep. We really worked on that and they improved and it showed."
