Saturday landmark: Osborne game #500

If you like history, Saturday’s Nebraska-Minnesota game goes beyond the 29 Cornhusker seniors who will play their final game at Memorial Stadium. The game also marks Game No. 500 in which Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne will be in an official role with the Husker football program.

Osborne was an assistant coach at Nebraska from 1962 to 1972. He served as NU’s head coach from 1973 to 1997, winning 255 games in 25 years. After serving three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives, Osborne returned to Nebraska as athletic director in Oct. of 2007.

In this, the 50-year anniversary that will celebrate consecutive home football sellout No. 325 on Saturday, it seems only fitting that Saturday’s game represents another major milestone. But everyone that knows Tom Osborne also knows that he wants Saturday’s spotlight to focus on a senior class that has won 46 games over the past five seasons and has a chance to win 50 in that same time stretch, if the Huskers can prevail in their final two regular-season games, win the Big Ten Championship and then triumph in the Rose Bowl.

Not sure Mr. York is correct with the Osborne figures here. It's my understanding TO began coaching @ NU in 1964? He played for the 49ers in 1962. In that case, it couldn't be #500 this weekend. However, after some quick research, this Saturday's game will be #622 since Devaney took over in 1962. That'd mean it'll be TO's 478th game with NU this Saturday since Devaney had already coached 22 games @ NU before hiring Osborne.

Here's what I've come up with:

Coach Osborne - 1964-1997 = 408 games

AD Osborne - 2007-2012 = 70 games (includes 5 games in 2007)

I believe he was a grad assistant in '62. Not sure if he joined mid-season or at the start.
That's what I'm wondering too, but I can't seem to find anything concrete. As I said, he was playing for the 49ers in '62. He was an unpaid assistant when Devaney hired him in '64.

Actually a pretty solid season for a back-up receiver in '61. 22 receptions for 297 yards and 2 TDs. Guess he couldn't get over a nagging hamstring injury.

No offense, but I would have to believe York if I had to choose. That guy knows damn near everything about Nebraska.
