SBNation: 2017 Big Ten football power rankings - This is a 4 team race

Saunders

Heisman Trophy Winner
Bill C’s Big Ten power rankingsHere’s a link to every team’s data, and each team’s name below is linked to its preview.

Tier 1

1. Ohio State

2. Penn State

3. Michigan

These power rankings are drawn up completely independent of any S&P+ projections below; they are purely my opinions on matters. Typically, when compared to S&P+, my own rankings take shape like the NBA Lottery, with mostly the same order as what the numbers dictated and maybe one or two teams in completely different places.

That’s not really the case here. Things get a little shuffled around in Tier 3, but heading into 2017, I feel like the top four teams are pretty clearly the top four teams, and No. 5 feels pretty clear to me as well.

If anybody outside this top three wins the conference, it would be a surprise.

Tier 2

4. Wisconsin

If anybody outside this top four wins the conference, it would be a stunner.

Tier 3

5. Northwestern

6. Minnesota

7. Iowa

8. Nebraska

9. Maryland

10. Indiana

11. Michigan State

Here’s where things get messy.

Wisconsin is vulnerable to be challenged by somebody in the West, but I go back and forth on who that is. I think Northwestern has the highest floor, Nebraska has the highest ceiling, Minnesota (with its massive change in coach and personality) has the widest range between ceiling and floor, and Iowa has the smallest range.

Basically, teams 5-8 occupy exactly the same space to me, but thanks to continuity, I trust Northwestern a hair more than the others. Which makes that September 30 Northwestern-Wisconsin game pretty big.

Pretty much. One great year, and the media collectively creams their jeans. I don't know anything about Fleck specifically, but in a lot of cases like this, it's not so much that the coach is amazing. Rather, it's more that they got lucky on the recruiting trail (usually a QB), and maybe just the right schedule and a few balls bouncing the right way for them.

Well most of them have touted us quite high in the past, only to come tumbling down to average at best. I am for the lower ranking, the questions, as I have always had them. Always next year, we will get them. Maybe the kids reading that they are behind Indiana will make them work harder, the staff work a little harder (not complaints here, love Coach Riley).

I think we will be better this year, and really do not care if the media thinks we won't. We are an average program, that has been for quite awhile, but we have a Coach that seems to be figuring out how to recruit to Nebraska. That is what has been needed for sometime.

I do not see us beating Ohio State, without a lot of luck. I am attending the Oregon game, not just for the game, but it falls into my vacation plan. Excited to see the Oregon campus and hope we surprise a lot of people there. I think we have a chance. If Tanner is anywhere near as competent as people that should know, say he is. Have been a fan of Taylor and Tommy, but never felt they were what Nebraska needed to be a current football team.

Now if Nebraska can get by Oregon at home, we might have a chance with Ohio State. They have talent, but Nebraska is gaining in that department, and a shot of confidence from an Oregon win would do wonders for this program. Mike needs to win this game. If it happens, I see a major change in the way Nebraska is looked at around the nation and by the kids we need to recruit.

Plus it would make my vacation way more FUN!!!!!!!

Decent write-up on Nebraska and can't disagree with the majority of it. I think they undersell Tanner Lee a bit (but the point about him proving nothing at Tulane is well taken). I also think we have some playmakers step up at WR in either JD or Tyjon - along with 2 of the 3 of Morgan, Pierson-El and Reimers have strong seasons. However, to the article's credit it does state if we win all the toss ups and throw in an upset we are looking at a 9 to 10 win team - which is where I see this team.

I guess I see the Oregon game as pretty much a toss up game. Oregon is getting the same benefit of the doubt that Minnesota is with Fleck. If Fleck is the next great up and coming coach than Taggard is 1a. Mariotta covered up a lot of flaws on that team just like Eric Crouch did for Nebraska back in the day. Not saying they are looking at another 4-8 season but I don't see 10-2 either. Something more like 7-5 or 8-4. I don't see beating Oregon as some upset.

Lots of experts are way overselling Oregon IMO.

Still don't get the hype on NW. Minnesota also has a very depleted roster. Next.
The "experts" really like the improvement Thorsan made last year at QB. They also have that little RB back for 1 more year. There defense will be solid, if not spectacular. Plus they beat Pitt in their bowl game, the team that beat Clemson. They should be decent, but I agree that they are being over hyped. I see 8-4 at best.

What makes you think that?

Northwestern last year allowed just 1.7 fewer points than Nebraska and allowed 40.7 more yards.

Why is theirs going to be so "spectacular" that it propels them up that much higher than us?

Sorry wrote that wrong. Ment to say "but not spectacular". They will be well coached and be sond on defense for the most part, but they are not shutting down everyone. I am in total agreement that they are getting too much love from the media. The media loves returning starters at QB, but for some reason they never really loved TA.
