SPARTANBURG, S.C. Spartanburg, SC -- A piece of Spartanburg history is stirring some controversy. A tribute to heroes of World War I sits in front of the Spartanburg Downtown Airport. It was dedicated in 1928 and lists the names of local men who died fighting. But the names are separated by skin color. There are 85 names listed under the heading "white," and 47 names under the heading "colored."
"Those that look at it from the racial point of view of what it means and what it signifies, there's some hard feelings on that end," Spartanburg Community Relations Director Mitch Kennedy told WYFF News 4's Elise Hu.
The city's Human Relations Commission plans to meet to decide the future of the monument to the past.
"We want to do what's in the best interest of the entire community. We want to get a consensus from our community about What they feel is best," Kennedy said.
Most city leaders agree something needs to be done either to explain the plaque or put it in historical context. The commission will meet in the next few weeks to make recommendations.
