Shatel: In firecoach.com world, Osborne all about #Perspective

LINCOLN — Imagine the reaction on Twitter after Jack Thompson and Washington State took victory from Memorial Stadium in the 1977 season opener. #firetomosborne.
Think of the message boards after the 38-7 loss to Oklahoma, Tom Osborne's fifth straight loss to the Sooners.

How long would the “Big Red Overreaction” postgame show have been after the Huskers lost to Missouri in 1978 and blew a shot at the national championship?

Would the Osborne Era have been cut short by the constant noise?

Not by Osborne's doing.

“I wouldn't have handled it much different,” said Osborne, when asked how he would have dealt with today's relentless media. “I didn't read the papers, didn't listen to the radio. I just focused totally on what I was doing.

“I suppose once in awhile I got upset about something somebody wrote, but for the most part, I was nice to reporters, because I didn't know what they had written."

Overreaction is a trait of the Nebraska fanbase, but I believe perspective is as well, amongst most of us. I've said it before on here, you can't fire a coach for winning 9/10 games a year. That is not a move that should happen at any program, especially Nebraska. As long as Coach Pelini continues to win 9 games his job should be safe. I truly believe that if we give Bo some time he will win championships here.

Have to look long term. Nebraska never has or never will have the ability to generate quick turnarounds under new coaches. This is not Ohio St. Not Florida. Not Alabama. We do not have the support of superior in-state talent in our back yard to rely on. We have to build perception in order gain over time the tools we need. 99% of us already know this, so it's broken record. Obviously when it get's rolling it's a special run, but the patience required to get there is tough to come by. When all is said and done, in this day of parady and competitiveness in college football, we should actually be thankful it's been as good as it has.

The last two posts, both great responses.

You don't fire a coach after a 9 win season....you have to give a man like Bo time. Period.

I agree you don't fire Bo or any coach if they reach 9 wins. Still upsets me we let Solich go after a 10 win season.

If Bo starts having 6 or 7 win seasons, that is when it is a time for change.

Funny that Shatel chose the 1977 season for this discussion. Just yesterday I was responding to a derpy derp post in this thread. LINK I pointed out that it's probably more appropriate to compare this year's Huskers (Bo's fifth year) to the 1977 Huskers (Osborne's fifth year) instead of comparing to the 1994 Husker team, the best team Osborne fielded in 25 years.

So maybe it's true: great minds think alike. (But more likely in my case: A broken clock is right twice per day.)

I'm actually glad we have that thread Nuance. Thank god there was someone to point out all the problems we actaully have on offense, because with the blinders I was leading myself to believe that the offense was the least of our worries this year.

Since penalties, turnovers and boneheaded mistakes are all part of the offense---yes, we still have some rather large concerns to address. But our offense does seem to move the ball nicely down the field at times. And seems to put up some decent numbers on the scoreboard.

//But I guess that's a topic for another thread, no? lol

Comparing TO to BO is foolish. However, these lines are apt -- TO was nice to reporters. TO understood that the media was the outlet to the fans. BO still struggles with that.

But, comparing TO to BO is rather pointless.

BO will either work through this or not.

kind of stupid of shatel to have an article about the internet and not mention cats or ponies. imho.
Or Ponycat!!

:sarcasm :D

I'm still on the fence about Bo. On one hand, there's still a lot that I'm seeing that I don't like. There's an obvious lack of discipline, and while that's not all on the coaching staff by any means, a big part of it is. A lot of people talk about recruiting and Nebraska's location making it harder to recruit, but there are plenty of examples of why that's a poor excuse (K State being one of them right now).

I guess the way I feel about it is, if Eichorst thinks he has a better coach than Bo found and decides to pull the trigger, it's not going to bother me. I'd much rather risk having a sub-.500 season to find a guy who can at least get Nebraska one national championship (or even a conference championship and a Rose Bowl berth for that matter) than be a consistent 9 to 10 win team without a national or conference championship to show for that consistency. Maybe Bo will get us to that next level, but I still have my doubts.

Isn't it rather moronic to be talking about firing a coach halfway through the season when we have a winning record? As most have said, it's not good to fire a coach after a 9 or 10 win season. We have to let the season unfold before we can even begin to think about replacing a coach. From the outside looking in, aren't we in this situation because of a kneejerk reaction several years ago? Clownahan earned his firing. Bo hasn't earned it yet, and there's no reason to think he will.

So you'd wanna be like Auburn. No thanks. Simple difference in opinion, but given the choice I'd take the 9-10 wins over that scenarios any day, especially doing it "the right way" as we are now. Winning isn't EVERYTHING, though it almost is.
